The Mets officially announced the signings of RHP Chirs Young and OF/UT Scott Hairston today. Both players received ML deals, meaning their will be announcement shortly on 2 players being removed from the 40 man roster to make room for Young and Hairston.

The deals and corresponding roster moves may impact Luis Hernandez, Tobi Stoner, and/or Mike Nickeas who currently hold 40 man roster spots, and Nick Evans who is out of options and would have to be passed thru waivers to be sent to the minor leagues. Hairston provides similar skills to those of Evans, including RH hitting bench power and better defensive skills in the outfield.

From the official press release, on Young:

Young, a former All-Star, went 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA (two earned runs/20.0 innings) in four starts last year for the San Diego Padres. The 6-10, 270-pounder has missed parts of the last three seasons with right arm problems.

“Chris has the potential to make a big contribution this year,” said Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson. “We were together in San Diego when he was one of the most dominating pitchers in the league and we feel he’s a good fit for Citi Field.”

And from the release regarding Hairston:

The New York Mets today announced that they have signed outfielder Scott Hairston, who has hit 44 home runs over the last three seasons, to a one-year contract.

Hairston, 30, had 10 doubles, 10 home runs, 36 RBI and scored 34 runs in 104 games for the San Diego Padres while batting .210 (62-295) last year.
