Is 5/$63 all the Mets are on the hook for? I know he's 36, but that's not terrible. OK, it's not great, but he could probably be traded back to the AL in the off-season if need be. I bet somebody would bite on him being their DH. In after next season, the NL will have a DH, right?

There was $37M due to Bruce and Swarzak that they moved to Seattle. Plus the Mets are getting $20M from Seattle to offset the Cano contract itself. Taken together that offsets $57M of the $120M due to Cano, effectively leaving $63M in 'new money' to the Mets. Now, you can go back to blame Sandy for saddling the team with Bruce and Swarzak in the first place, but BVW had to deal with the hand he was given.

Laughable.

In one breath you claim a two year, $26m deal (effective) for Bruce was “saddling” the Mets and in the next you’re applauding a five year, $100m deal to a 36 year old steroid user.

The best thing that could happen to the Mets is Cano gets caught using two more times.

Oh come on. What’s laughable is any attempt to compare a likely future HOFer who had more war in a half season in 2018 than Jay Bruce has accumulated in the last 5 seasons combined.

There's some precedent for guys getting busted for PEDs in their late-thirties then going on to last much longer than they had any reason to (Marlon Byrd, Nelson Cruz) so I don't know if "steroid user" is necessarily a pejorative when it comes to post-steroid performance.

This is a false choice. They could have easily eaten a chunk of Bruce’s deal to get rid of him and not taken on a $100m commitment to a 36 year old.

I didn’t suggest it was a choice. You disingenuously conflated the 2 players but they’re not comparable. Cano is making much more bc he’s been worth a heck of a lot more. Which contract is more onerous is a matter of opinion but the bigger point is which player is going to help the team win more. Shouldn’t that be the discussion point?

I wonder if this micro-debate is going to be re-run every single week. It was already tedious a few months ago.

Not even sure what point you’re making. They couldn’t have gone elsewhere and gotten Edwin Diaz. Not sure why you can’t reconcile this.
