No. He's not.

2010 - $9.7 m
2011 - 2014 - $12-12.5 m

The length makes him not cheap, if as Northway stated, he continues a decline. It would all depend on the Jays subsidizing the contract, but it would be a crapshoot...

If he maintained a .800ish OPS over that time, with his defense and speed, I think he's not a bad player surrounded by better ones.

Compared to Wells, though, he is a much better bargain. Wells is a money pit, Rios is survivable at any performance level.

I am sure Omar Minaya is talking to them ..

Vernon Well is not moveable. Period. Contact is too big.

Alex Rios on the other hand ..

I wonder what they mean by "give away" .. Is it REALLY give away?

Except that this year's team is the 2nd worst defensively in the majors according to UZR...

In fairness, Beltran's, Reyes and Church's absences hurt. Delgado has no range, but he is solid at the plays that should be made.

With those guys healthy, I think we'd be in the top half defensively, which considering Castillo's decline is probably not terrible.

Well yeah but he still wants guys he perceives as good defensively. Sheffield stands out as an exception (I'm sure no one, including Minaya thought he'd be good on D) but he was supposed to be a bench/part-time guy and I'm sure he liked Castillo and Schneid because of what he thought was good defense.

I agree with Stache. Rios' defensive reputation (in his case, well deserved) is something that Omar will like.

P.S. Amazinavenue had an intersting comparison of different defensive measurements of the Mets and brought up something I didn't realize. UZR is still using Shea's park factor for defensive plays made in Citifield. Not saying the Mets defense hasn't been bad (it has) but that does seem a little wonky.

The only form of "giveaway" that I would consider is if it involved the Blue Jays taking back Castillo. Our organization has a lack of major league ready right handed hitting which makes Rios a little more attractive. But, I still stick by my earlier statement about Isiah Thomas.

Rios might have all 5 tools, but they are dull tools.

He has no concept of the strike zone and is exactly what the Mets don't need.

He's not that much better than Church, and I'm not equating in his absurd contract or his attitude issues.

JP Ricciardi would do a dance if he could get rid of his overpaid RF, then he'd only have one more overpaid OF to get rid of.
