And to follow-up Sandy's attempt to make you feel warm and fuzzy, here's Captain Cliche today:

“I think we understand that everyone in our division got better. We have to do the little things right. We’re not going to be able to outslug teams or outpitch these teams with a lot of number one starters. … A lot of these teams, we’re not going to be able to match them pitching-wise or run-for-run, but I think we can outwork or out-prepare them.”
De La Cruz looks like an extreme flyball guy - his GB% in AA last season was below 30%. That combined with bad control is just a poor combination. His stuff is reportedly great and he can miss bats though, so he's probably worth taking a lottery ticket on with a 40-man spot. I'd easily boot Carrasco or Hefner off for him. But then again, I'd probably boot them for a lot of guys, so maybe that's not saying much.
For whatever reason, I didn't really want him, but thats obviously a very very reasonable price and I am a bit shocked we didn't do that - the idea now is that we're waiting for veterans on minor league deals to be cut in ST, apparently. Probably still not going to be much cheaper than that, though, I would presume? Whats the veteran minimum, 600-700k?

David's a player on a team with low expectations. He's saying what he should be saying and what many others have said before him in that same situation. Someone want to find a quote from a member of the Cleveland Spiders?
He's not going to fool fans into believing but he may fool himself and I think a big part of being a pro athlete is being able to do just that. Blind optimism from Coutinho is annoying. Blind optimism from David Wright is actually really nice to hear right about now.

Positive development: Heyman last week quoted scouts calling Torres a "5th OFer."
Andy Martino in his chat today refers to him as a "4th OFer."
#progress
Martino probably just forgot about Loewen.

But still, as MLB.com runs down the teams by "area" (yesterday was rotation; we shockingly weren't included in the top 10) - here's their writeup of bullpens, in which our pen kinda-sorta makes an appearance:
Quote:
9. Blue Jays: The Jays have acted aggressively this winter to turn a weakness into a strength. Last year, they tied for the second-fewest holds (50) and the third-highest number of blown saves (25) in the big leagues. Thanks to the acquisition of former White Sox closer Sergio Santos (a one-time infielder in the Toronto system), the ninth inning is no longer a black hole...should give manager John Farrell a much more reliable unit for 2012.
Remember, we imported the back-end of the Blue Jays pen as our "big" acquisitions this offseason, supposedly turning our biggest weakness into a great strength. We don't make the top 10, or the 7 "honorable mentions" below it and the only time we're discussed is to point out how much better our guys' former team will be with them gone.
Sigh.
Regarding the Mets, let's not forget we're talking about upgrading a pen whose most consistently reliable positive element was Manny Acosta. It's all relative.

Scott Kazmir's throwing session was pushed to Friday.
Kazmir was originally scheduled to throw for interested teams on Wednesday afternoon in Houston, but he backed things up for an unknown reason. Probably to accommodate a club. The 28-year-old left-hander told ESPN's Buster Olney that he "feels well as he prepares." The Mets may have some level of interest.

Really hoping we bring Kazmir. Not just for the sake of his connection but because we need some pitching depth in a bad way. I would rather not see Jeremy Hefner and Garrett Olson starting games in the event of 2 injuries. Would have no problem with Mets bring in Kazmir and Chris Young on MiL deals and ST invites.

Kazmir was throwing 85-86 last anyone had him on the gun. Doubt he's any better than Hefner/Olson at this point.
