I hate it when they bring up a young left-handed hitter to sit him against lefties. This should be a season when we develop young players.
There are a few things working against Kirk at the moment. There's always that "don't want to put a lot of pressure on him" thing, but Hairston needs AB's too, and this is a good time to do it vs. the lefty.

I understand that Hairston needs at bats to stay effective. If this was a win now team then the best move would definitely be a Kirk-Hairston platoon. However, this team isn't going anywhere this year. You give the young player all the at bats to see if he can figure lefties out without concerning yourself about the veteran bench player.
I'm hoping this is just a case of early season contending optimism and that when we inevitably fall out of it the development of our young players becomes priority number one.

The Mets are going to act as if they're a win-now team until it's clear they're not. As fans, I think we can understand that, since that's how we're going to treat the team, too, even if we "know better." It would be impossible for TC to manage these guys in a way that suggests they're not interested in competing this year whether the statistics/projections suggest things should work out that way.
It makes sense to look at the numbers at the competition and come to the conclusion that this isn't the Mets year, but these are hypercompetitive humans trying to do their job here and from an organizational/management standpoint, you can't fly the white flag while expecting players to run through walls.
The guy filling out the lineup card is going to try to win every game. The only person who can really shake things up is SandyCo, and only he can do that by shuffling the roster around (in the furure: by trading Hairston, releasing Torres, etc.). Can't blame Terry for wanting to get W's even if "we all know" that the Mets aren't exactly a good team to bet on in 2012.

By the way, this would be an enormous W.
