Rob Bradford of WEEI.com was told by a major league source that the Red Sox have signed Australian left-hander Daniel McGrath.
McGrath's team, the Doncaster Dragons Baseball Club, broke the news via their Twitter account. The 17-year-old left-hander was reportedly choosing between attending college in the United States or signing a contract with a pro team. Peter Abraham of the Boston Globe notes that McGrath stands at 6-foot-3 and reportedly possesses a good fastball. The Red Sox have yet to confirm the signing.

According to Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald, the Marlins' offer to Yoenis Cespedes was worth less than $40 million.
A source told Eric Reynoso of Cafe Fuerte on Saturday that the Marlins made an offer this week of "around $40 million." And now we can guess that it was probably in the 30s. Cespedes returned to the Dominican Republic on Thursday night after meeting only with the Fish. The Cubs, White Sox, Orioles and Tigers are thought to be interested in the 26-year-old Cuban outfielder as well.

The Cubs are reportedly stepping up their pursuit of 19-year-old Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler.
Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus broke the initial rumors. "(Soler) profiles as a very classic right-field profile on a scouting level," Goldstein told MLB Network Radio. "He's a big, athletic kid. He ran well for scouts. He ran a 6.7 60 for them the other week, which is above average. At his age and his size, that's not going to last. He just doesn't look like a guy that's going to stay fast. What he's going to be is a right fielder who's gonna hit for power. He's gonna throw well, hit home runs. That's going to be his job. Big, big kid. Broad shoulders, tons of raw power. He's a very exciting player." Initial estimates have Soler's asking price in the $20 million range.

Their collection of outfielders grows; Smith, Crisp, Cowgill, Reddick, Gomes, Taylor, now Cespedes. I wonder if they send him to the minors to start, though RF isn't really blocked should they choose to be aggressive.
Oakland is doing a nice job of building up their farm system.
That is a chunk of change for a player, who may, or may not need minor-league time. If he takes a year to arrive (unlikely), it is basically a $12 m a year deal. He better be good at that price.

The Cubs are expected to agree to a deal with Cuban outfielder Jorge Soler, according to Dave van Dyck of the Chicago Tribune. Dave van Dyck cites multiple reports in the Dominican Republic, which is where Soler is staying. The 19-year-old outfielder is waiting for clearance from MLB before being declared a free agent, so an official announcement doesn't appear imminent, but the Cubs are already the heavy favorites. In fact, one report suggests Chicago is willing to give Soler a three- or four-year deal worth $27.5 million. Related: Cubs Source: Chicago Tribune Feb 13 - 11:26 PM
