It's pretty uninteresting to say that you're "willing" to sacrifice defense for Murphy's bat when there is not really a 2B competition this spring.

The WORST thing the Mets can do this season is limit the AB's of Murphy or Duda because of defensive concerns. If this year should do anything it should give you a great idea who-
Ike, Duda, Murphy, Thole, Niese, Gee etc are and are not.

At Baseball Prospectus, Kevin Goldstein collected some comments from scouts and executives about players in spring training in Florida. An unnamed “evaluator” on Aderlin Rodriguez:
“I thought he’d hit last year,” said the evaluator. “And if you look at all of the numbers, the strikeouts were not out of control. After seeing him again this Spring, I still believe in the bat.”

Aderlin's awful BABIP numbers are the main reason I still hold out some hope for him - as noted, his strikeouts really weren't that bad, particularly for a power hitter.

Toby, who admits to being a huge fan, has often noted that the BABIP wasn't necessarily fluky - lots of weak, weak contact.
I think you hope for more consistently hard contact rather than just consistent contact, and point to the power numbers in Savannah as being much better than they look at first glance considering the home environment, as reasons to believe a breakout is still on the horizon, though.

Joe Savery earned a win in relief after striking out three in two scoreless innings Monday against the Tigers. With Dontrelle Willis gone, Savery is suddenly looking like a legitimate candidate for a bullpen job. The 2007 first-round pick has yet to allow a run in 5 1/3 innings this spring, and he's struck out seven batters. Mar 19 - 4:30 PM

Carlos Quentin is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Monday.
Quentin had a meniscus tear repaired and loose cartilage removed. It's a tough break for the Padres, who surprised many around baseball by acquiring the 29-year-old outfielder from the White Sox during the offseason. Kyle Blanks should benefit in the short-term.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the Rangers and left-hander Derek Holland are on the verge of a contract extension through at least 2016. Terms aren't yet known, but the new deal would supersede his current one-year contract. Holland is currently due to be arbitration-eligible for the first time next offseason and remains under team control through 2015. The 25-year-old left-hander went 16-5 with a 3.95 ERA last season and tied for the AL lead in shutouts with four. Source: Dallas Morning News Mar 19 - 11:52 PM
This should give us some idea the ballpark of what Niese will cost to lock up.

Ya think? lol
Here’s Collins: “I want to see the velocity going up a little bit. Because with that, I think we’ll see some more movement.”
And here’s Pelfrey: “I wanted to throw a little harder. I think in order to get your velocity up, you need to try and throw harder. But when I yank a sinker, maybe it comes from trying to throw it too hard. I know today that caused a lot of bad execution.”

Holland supposedly got $28.5M over 5 years with 2 club options (buying out his last pre-arbitration year, all 3 arbitration years, and at least 1 free agent year). That's a great deal for Texas.
