Matt (NY): “…Anyway, do you buy in to the Lucas Duda hype around here? People are saying he has the power/batting eye combo to be a middle of the order stud. Do you see differently?”
Klaw: I do see differently. He’s not that good. Jeff (NY): What is/was your take on Jon Niese? He seems to have come along quietly and developed into a solid, yet underrated, starter with potential to get a little bit better. Klaw: Sure. Could see him being a league-average starter for a while.
Lance (Florida): What do you think of the hiring of Tanous as Mets new scouting director? Heard he has history with Riccardi so if there was anyone to ask it would be you. Klaw: Worked with Tommy several years in Toronto – he was a big influence on me and taught me quite a bit about player evaluation. I think it’s a great hire.
zach (NY): whats your take on the Mets 3 young studs harvey, wieler, and familia Klaw: High-end starter, high-end starter, reliever.
Chris (NY): What can you tell me about Jack Leathersich? His minor league numbers are insignificant due to sample size, but they are pretty crazy… Klaw: Solid relief arm. Throws hard, probably a 7th-8th inning ceiling.

There is a pretty massive difference between "middle of the order stud" and not being a solid player. Unfortunately as Prospectus pointed out... his answer was so short that you couldn't get a true gauge on what he meant. Even if he sees Duda as a 275/360/460 player (which is very nice) it's not a "middle of the order stud".

I think any pundit's opinions are as good as another's if they are looking at the same thing in the same way. Law obviously watches prospects play, which gives him a leg up on others who don't, but I think his definitive answers regarding Familia and Vaughn turned me off a bit.

Yeah I agree can't say middle order stud but use a blanket statement and flat out saying he isn't good, is stupid.

Averages for national league per batting position in the middle of the order 3rd - .280 .353 .457 .811 4th - .269 .352 .455 .807 5th - .255 .326 .417 .743
Last season's stats would put him 5% above the 3rd place hitters, 6% above the clean-up guys, and 15% above the 5th slot folks. So I see what Law is saying, and it was not necessarily a slight against Duda.
I think TC's prognostications are a bit much, honestly.

I think "middle of the order stud" means more "Joey Votto" and less "league average #5 hitter".
