Edgin has retired 16 of the 20 hitters he's faced, and the 4 who have reached have reached on:
-Walk -Intentional Walk -double by Dirks after Rob Johnson drops foul pop-up -double by Wallace on a misplay by Loewen in LF
Cool.
But Olson or Batista needs to make the team because of [reason].
Actually, the real (fair) reason is that Byrdak is going to be back soon and it doesn't make a ton of sense to carry Edgin and start his clock for a few weeks. But it's boring.
If this is actually even part of the reason then that's insane. There isn't a team in baseball that should be concerned with starting the clock of a 25 year old non-top-prospect reliever. Are we really that concerned with getting that extra year of control when he's 31? Or scared that he might end up a Super Two?

I think the only valid reason is if you don't think he is ready (small sample size success) and that Byrdak will be back very shortly so it makes more sense to go with a short term guy (for 2 weeks or so) and allow Edgin to get far more work at AA or AAA pitching 3-4 times a week, pitching entire innings vs. say 3-4 batters per week.

As I've said before, I think Edgin could absolutely be successful right now; (for charlie: I would rate him higher than 'non top prospect btw - few relievers get called a top prospect, but there's a lot of reasons to think he'll be a good reliever) at the same time, it may be better for his development as Metro says for him to develop pitching longer stints at AAA than doing LOOGY duty for the Mets.
Said another way, he has the potential to be more than a LOOGY; it wouldn't be doing him a service to his development to treat him like one just because your current LOOGY is out for a month. I'd rather see him get some practice at getting decent righties out.
At the same time, I think it's extremely likely and appropriate for him to be up at some point this year, since he is older and doesn't have too much to learn.

Gotta love the PCL

Higher than non-top-prospect is a top prospect - I think we agree here but are just mixed up on the wording. It wasn't a slight at Edgin, but he's not a top 100 type player. My point was it's crazy to worry about service time for anyone of his status, or relief prospects in general outside of maybe someone like Kenley Jansen. He's 25 and in his prime physically. Why waste even an inning of that for extra control when he's 31? I understand the development side of things but I don't think team control should be a factor (not the point you were making anyway).
A How bout some offense? We start in centerfield where Brandon Nimmo was 3-4 with a walk. RF Eudy Pina benefitted, going 2-3 with a HR (a three-run jack) and six RBI. – Pina’s 6’3″, 190 and will be 21 in April. He hit .223/.285/.317 in 52 games for the GCL Mets a year ago. If I had to guess, I’d peg the Savannah starting outfield as Nimmo in center, flanked by some combination of Travis Taijeron, Gilbert Gomez and Joe Tuschak.
Philip Evans lined up at shortstop, and had an impressive defensive day.

I gotcha, and I agree that service time shouldn't be part of the discussion regarding Edgin.
