No way we're happy if he's throwing 86, but he's got 4 K's today in 2 innings so something is working.

Wasn't just the velocity. He was reportedly was bouncing a lot of pitches as well. I'm not going nuts at all based on 1 inning. I just don't think IF he's 86-87 during the season he will be very effective. 4th starter? Maybe. TOR? Highly, highly doubtful.

He's been sitting 88-89 all spring, topping at 90, 91.

That still doesn't tell you what his velocity will look like going 6 innings every 5th day.

I'll take that sample size over a 1 inning sample size.

Sounds like the velocity is still down-
AdamRubinESPN Meanwhile, Johan still has somehow struck out 5 thru 2.1 with velocity down. Another changeup for a K, this time to Carlos Beltran. 50 seconds ago · reply · retweet · favorite

Where is the sample size of Santana velocity pitching 5+ innings every 5th day? I think it's acceptable to be at least SOMEWHAT concerned with reduced velocity today. I would be concerned if Niese were throwing 3 mph slower today too.

Let's see where he's at for the rest of the game.
