Can we PLEASE stop with the "Mets never made an offer" thing? From all accounts, Alderson told Reyes' agents how high the Mets would be willing to go, and they told him to screw off. And as Rubin reported, the Marlins simply would've kept bidding and bidding until they secured Reyes. I don't think there's any way the Mets would've kept Reyes (financial issues or otherwise). Thought they could do it at 5 guaranteed with some options, but never saw Alderson guaranteeing 6 or 7 years under any circumstances.
As far as the video tribute, I really don't care, but it's not something I would've done. Just not the right circumstance for it. I'll be there Tuesday, and I won't cheer or boo. Simply gonna stand there.
And you know more than anybody else how? Were you in on negotiations?

When Marlins president David Samson said Tuesday that Jose Reyes was after every dollar in free agency, it seemed to contradict the shortstop’s December complaint that the Mets “didn’t want me.” "He said, ‘I really want to play in Miami as long as you pay me $1 more than anyone else," Samson said. "'I really want to make the most money I can.'" But people close to Reyes have insisted that was not the case. According to sources, Reyes would have strongly considered a somewhat smaller deal from the Mets, both in years and dollars, and was shocked when his longtime team did not make an offer. Reyes signed a six-year, $106 million deal with Miami, and would have seriously entertained returning to the Mets on a five-year deal, sources say. Of course, there is no way to prove a hypothetical — and anyway, one Mets insider said that some members of the front office were unwilling to guarantee more than four years.
I'm citing Rubin. And I'll choose to believe him over the hack Andy Martino.

I'm pretending to know? You made a definitive statement, Sandy Alderson openly acknowledged no offer was made. He said they spoke parameters. This much isn't up for debate. Sandy said so (unless for some reason you think Sandy is lying... which would make absolutely no sense). I haven't hated on the front office at all. Saying "he left for a bit more money and 1 more year" is a false statement because you have absolutely no idea how much money OR years the Mets WOULD have been willing to offer thus you are comparing the Marlins offer to what? The Mets "imaginary" offer was near 106 million? Unless you were in on the discussions (which again Sandy admits no formal offer was made) how would you know how much more money the Marlins offered? If the Mets said 5 years 85 is that only a "bit more money"? No... that's 21 million dollars a player is guaranteed to make.

Please show me a quote from Adam Rubin stating the Mets made a formal offer to Jose Reyes.

“I always said I wanted to go back to play there, but they didn’t do anything to have me there,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s because of the money or they don’t want me there. They didn’t offer anything.”

You're hyperlinking crap that doesn't prove jack, jack.
Jose' said they didn't offer anything?
So what - parameters were discussed, which means that negotiations were underway, his agent went back to the fish and said, 'this is the parameters of what the mets are willing to do'...the fish beat it and Jose signed.
From Reyes' point of view he probably is right - they didn't offer. Once the Fish signed him for more than the Mets were willing to pay the point was moot. But to say that the Mets didn't offer anything, from their perspective the intent was there based upon plenty of other articles/quotes, etc.
Ergo, Alderson/the Mets acted in good faith. Ergo Reyes took a few more $$$ and another year based upon what the Mets were seemingly willing to offer (and frankly I don't care if Reyes got ARod type #'s...it was still mercenary...which I honestly have no problem with).
One final note - Reyes, after he signed said a number of things that pointed the finger back at the Mets. That's pretty typical from a ballplayer leaving for mo' money - deflect blame. But like I said, I can't blame him. Ride the coat tails of a career year. Good luck and Godspeed to him. Hope the Fish finish in last place.

I'm done arguing the Reyes stuff. He's gone and this is just going to result in a circular debate.
If you don't want to argue, don't say someone's wrong.
Wrong? My opinion differs from yours so it is wrong? Someone has a God complex and it's not me. SANDY ALDERSON HIMSELF ADMITTED THEY DIDN'T MAKE A FORMAL OFFER.... you need more than that? YOU said he "left a little money on the table"... show me how YOU could possibly know what money was left on the table. Show me the number Reyes was "offered" that allows you to decide how "little" money was left on the table. 106 was what he got, and the Mets (according to you) offered....? Because there has to be some number below 106 that allows you to say "he left a little money". So what's the number that you somehow know that NOBODY else reported?

Why do fans want to place an evil villain mustache on Reyes' face? We are 7-3, this is definitely not the darkest timeline. Jose was in the organization from 16 to 28, that is a very long time. Not to mention he had close relationships with David Wright and RA Dickey among other players from the past and present. I can go down the list of categories Jose has with this club. I don't get the Matt Cerrones and his Metsblog commentarati losing their minds over this. Edgardo Alfonzo got honored accolades and he left in a similar albeit less controversial fashion (Mets made no offer but many people believed he was bound to decline giving it was clear he fudged his age even though he was a fan favorite).
It was pretty clear the Mets were not in a financially stable place at the time of the Reyes FA courting but could not say anything about it publicly. Deep down, I think ownership wished other teams lined up but it was only the Marlins and yeah, Reyes got a great deal it was not Crawford money that Fred Wilpon threw out there in The New Yorker piece. It had little to do with Sandy and the Moneyball memes that people were throwing out before even the 2011 season started.
