• Sandy Alderson on WNBC on Sunday night said regarding David Wright's contract status (the Mets hold a 2013 option): "We've said, look, let's play out at least part of this season and see where we are. But I, honestly, at this point cannot foresee David playing elsewhere."

Quote:
That will cost money, though. Considered a comp, Washington Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman agreed to a six-year, $100 million extension Feb. 26. The deal is on top of the combined $26 million he was due to earn between this season and 2013. The Nats have a team option for 2020. Wright is 21 months older than Zimmerman

Not only is Zimmerman almost two years younger, he's also a much better defensive 3bman than DW is. That said, I do think 6 years 100 mil will be the contract that David gets from the Mets. Not that I think it's a good idea to give it to him though.

The age 100% has to be taken into account when compared to Zimmerman. 2 years is 2 years. I think Wright will remain a Met but 7-8 years guaranteed would be pretty foolish for ANY player who isn't named Pujols, Kemp, Cabrera etc.

"I'll let it stand for what it was," Alderson said.

But there is a confidence level he's going to remain a Met long term now?

"I don't think anything I said last night is a deviation or expansion on what I've said before," Alderson said.

Still, "cannot foresee David playing elsewhere" has strong implications. Does that mean the GM has always felt that way?

"Yeah. I'll let those comments stand on their own."

If DW stays I'd like to believe they will use him to try and recruit his friend BJ Upton here after the year. Upton would be a huge upgrade to the defense, much better chance he is in our price range (if we are really going to increase the payroll), is still young and would really upgrade the speed/power.

I'm hoping Wright at least bounces back this year (no, 2 weeks doesn't equal a season) to make a potential extension look more palatable. I would absolutely not go near a Zimmerman-like contract right now. If you ripped up his 2013 option, fair value for Wright is something around 4/60 or 5/70, maybe a little less.

Talk is cheap.

I could never see JR playing elsewhere.

Look I think the Mets are going to end up overpaying for him. And if he bounces back and has a Shea Stadium David Wright year, I can see him getting much more than you suggest.
