Niese is dealing.
Ike has a new thing with the bat resting on his shoulder ebfore delivery. Looks ike he's being tinkered with by Hudgens. And it pays dividends! Ike hits a rocket past Reyes for a single..errr..a bloop...hey, a hit's a hit!!!

It's been 35 to 40 years, but I recall the early 70s Mets has having been undermined a good deal by key injuries.
The 1969 team was young at most positions and the pitching was strong for several years, but things always seemed to go wrong.
Even the 1973 team was riddled by injuries, which is why they were muddling along most of the year until they caught fire in September. And even then, their star position player, Rusty Staub, finished with what was essentially a separated shoulder.
True. I think the 72 team started out 30 and 11. I remember Staub started out great and then got injured and missed three months of the season. And because I did some research on the 71 team, they started out 47 and 29 then fell apart in July and August. Though not sure if injuries were the problem that year.

Valdespin fouls off a bunch of pitches before K'ing on a check swing.

Valdespin took 2 pitches? Or is Gameday mistaken?
You can really tell he wants to swing at everything.

Niese works back from a 1-2 count to walk. 41 pitches so far for Nolasco. Would be nice to see Kirk make him throw a bunch more.
