Free. Collin. McHugh.
He's better then Hefner and/or Schwinden. And Olson.
I don't mean to be snarky because I am absolutely as bad as anyone is with the "He can't possible be worse than...." stuff, but the very likely odds is that he really isn't.
I wouldn't mind trying him out, but remember, he's in AA, and plenty of "pitchability" guys over the years here have succeeded at that level and never anywhere further. No one needs more of a reminder of this than I do, as I tend to fall hard for guys who "polish" their way through the minors.
I think the issue/question is.... what's the downside in sending him AAA at this point? He's not young, he's not going to have artificially boosted trade value and I think he could be a pen arm if starting doesn't work out. With these "low upside" types sometimes it's the guy you don't expect who succeeds.

Doesn't sound like Collins is going to rush Harvey
Quote:
We're not going to push Familia or Harvey," Collins said only last week. "They're going to spend, I'm sure, the majority of the year in Triple-A.
"You've got to pitch consistent," Collins said. "I've spent too many years in Triple-A with good pitchers to know that numbers aren't always the true indicator of whether they can pitch here. So Matt Harvey, the one thing he's got to show us is that he can throw all of his pitches for strikes, regardless of what the results may be. With his arm and his stuff, if he can pound the strike zone with all of his pitches, he's going to be effective."
"Matt just needs to throw quality start after quality start," [Wally] Backman said. "If he goes out there and does that eight or nine times in a row, it's going to make people wonder and think. But I don't think [a callup] is going to happen right now. It's still a learning process."

While I'm kind of on board with the idea that Collin McHugh can't be much worse than what we're running out there, I'm not sure it would be a good career move for him.

Pretty sure Alex Cora comes out to hug Ian Desmond.
He's not on their roster, and he's not listed on their coaching staff, so what IS Alex Cora doing in the Nationals dugout in baseball pants!?
Intangible veteran leadership in action.

The Phillies are a wreck, struggling against the easiest schedule in baseball to date and blowing separate 6 run and 4 run leads last night, and now Doc Halladay, who looks like a shell of himself thus far stuff-wise, has left the time in mysterious fashion. (http://www.csnphilly.com/baseball-phila ... feedID=704 - the news that inspired this post)
If there was ever a time to capitalize and have a Cinderella run here, this is it. 13-9, should've came home 15-10. Instead got your brains beat in by a crappy Astros team and its almost completely wiped out the strong first month and started you back at square 1 with the .500 record. Turn it around, pull of the surprise sweet of Arizona like you did against the Marlins last week after the Monday Night Massacre, and head into Philly and that trainwreck riding high again and lets see if we can't extend this little run throughout May. The longer you hang around, the more I'll believe. But if you slip behind these teams that were supposed to be better but are scuffling early, I don't think your climbing back out with a mid-season run.
Keep the hope alive, Mets. Its been too much fun for the first month to let this disaster in Houston be that 'turning point' we look back at in July when we're trading off anyone and everyone to the highest bidder and using Hefner AND Schwinden (not OR) in the 5-man.
The worst possible thing is having the Phillies come in on Monday reeling...you'd think it would be to our advantage, but a series against the Mets might be what they have been in need of. D-Backs are a tough series.
From my perspective, any winning by the Mets this year is gravy, though. Have to get some hitting, though...
Murphy .283 .333 .343 .677 --early and small sample, but he'll have to hit much better to justify the glove, which although not as horrendous as I thought, is still enough to project at 35 errors this year.

Heath Bell was gold again last night. He entered the 9th with a 2-0 lead and gave up 3 straight hits and was pulled for Steve Cishek, without recording a single out. They still ended up winning thanks to Stanton, but oh how fun it is to see *PROVEN CLOSER* HEATH BELL totally flop.
Only a month into a pricey 3 year deal and Bell looks terrible visually and statistically and he may even be out as closer. There were a lot of warning signs last season that he was no longer a great relief pitcher.

He's always hit for power in the past, he's bound to start getting some doubles soon.
