Last question, I have to ask. What hat will you wear in the Hall of Fame?

That's an interesting question. The only reason I laugh about it is because I think it's funny people make the hat such a big deal. I don't know -- it's hard to explain. I have a special affinity for the Mets' fans, because that's where I spent a bulk of my time, and if I were to go in as a Met I don't think it would be something that people would have any disagreement with. I will always appreciate my years with the Dodgers coming up in that organization. Getting traded to the Mets, going to the World Series and having some amazing moments like the one you mentioned after 9/11. The Hall would probably relate those things, and I don't think that would be much of a surprise. How is that for a non-answer?

To me it sounded pretty clear he sees himself going in as a Met

He said that at a Knicks game. What would his response had been if he was asked at the Staples Center?

Piazza answered this 2 years ago:

If the Hall Calls, Piazza Wants to Enter as a Met
By JOE BRESCIA
Published: May 8, 2010

Quote:
And although Major League Baseball will decide which team’s cap will be on his plaque, Piazza, who played the first seven years of his 16-year career with the Los Angeles Dodgers, said he would want to be inducted as a Met.

“The bulk of my career was with the Mets,” he said, “and after going through the trade, then the drama of 9/11. I’ll never forget my Dodger days. But my time with the Mets is what I’ll remember most about my career.”

I thought the answer was obvious for the Greatest Living Marlin.

Perhaps there is still a question because the player isn't allowed to choose anymore?

Yes, but I believe the player still has input and if it were close between 2 teams the association would probably go with the players wishes, or I read somewhere a time back...

This was made an issue when Wade Boggs signed as a FA with the Devil Rays and apparently had a deal/arrangement that he'd chose them when he was eventuallly inducted, IIRC..

Yeah, and if you're using the "He's 19" logic, then I guess the best report a scout could give us is:

"I have no idea. He's a teenager. He may go through 5 arm surgeries between now and his 30th birthday. He may add a pitch. He may lose a pitch. He may put on 30 lbs and add velocity. He may put on 50 lbs and eat his way out of the league. I literally have no idea what he is going to be."

But thats not what these guys are paid to do, nor what we are looking for them to do, right?

If you think about it, he's in a tough spot answering that question.

Even though there were Dodger fans who turned on him after he left, I'm sure he still has plenty of fond memories and a lot of fans still there. Plus, they gave him a chance when every other team passed on him for 60-something rounds. I also wouldn't be surprised if he's concerned about hurting Tommy Lasorda's feelings.

Then, he had a lot of good experiences in NY and is revered by the fans here.

So, basically, why not be a bit evasive when all you could do by being definitive is alienate some of your fans and it's not your choice, anyway?
