I'd like to think the FO has plans that extend beyond the Pittsburgh series, but I see no evidence of it.

I agree with Chico's thoughts above. Wright is the kind of player/person that any team would be proud to have as an icon for their franchise.

Ron Darling agrees with this concept as well, here is what Ronnie recently had to say about Wright:

"Regarding Wright bickering with Collins in the dugout because he wanted to remain in Tuesday's game against Milwaukee to get drilled as payback for D.J. Carrasco hitting Ryan Braun, Ron Darling said: “I think there were probably people on the bench who didn’t understand what the hullabaloo was about at all and were taught a valuable lesson. 'What? Get hit? Who wants to get hit?’ He basically said, 'I know how the game is played and I know what we have to do in certain situations and I’m willing to do that.' David is one of those rare current players who could’ve played in any generation. There is a real courage in the way he plays the game. Guy played three weeks with a back that was broken last year, hits a homer with a broken finger because he knows his team needs him. I watch him play, and it makes me proud that I was part of the fraternity.”"

Letting Reyes walk was a huge mistake. It would pale in comparison to let Wright go. His value is beyond sabermetrics (which are pretty flattering this year).

Interesting thought. Ironically, most of the Mets plans in 2013 are based on Omar kids (with Sandy's Wheeler in the mix).

The Mets will have to be extremely proactive to get this done, IMO.

By that, I mean give Wright a deal that prompts a lot of naysayers to claim they overpaid and bid against themselves.

A quick question about David's 2013 option. As far as I know if he is traded this season(or before the option kicks in) the option is voided and he can be a FA following this season. Now does that mean the option also includes a No Trade Clause? Or can he be traded immediately after it vests?

I dunno, man. The early returns seem to be working in the Mets favor. And I loved Jose.

158 AB, 11 XBH, 0 HR, 6 RBI, .247/.331/.335/.667 for and average of almost $17 million per year ?

I'm sure his stats will be better by year's end, but right now, it's not looking like such a huge mistake by Sandy, Fred and Jeff.

Couldn't the same be said about Beltran year 1? or a million other guys? No reason to believe Reyes is suddenly a .667 OPS player. They may have in fact made the right move because of the long term implications but this years stats don't mean anything toward proving that.

Like you said, early returns. Sample size is too small, and new players tend to press (see Pujols).

I don't think Reyes will ever have a year quite like last as far as raw stats, but the reason I saw it as a mistake goes beyond stats...

I'm pretty sure the option doesn't have a no trade clause so if a deal can't be worked out and the mets pick up his 1 year option, they can trade him next year if a contract can't be worked out.

As Metro said, and I agree, if the Mets and Wright can't reach an agreement, I think they'll trade him next year. That's the advantage of trying to reach a deal a year ahead of time.

One could say that the mistake with Reyes was not trying to reach a deal in 2010, but I think Reyes always wanted to test the free agent market and the mets, in 2010, weren't sure if they were in rebuilding mode or what the Madoff situation would be - so there were 2 reasons why a deal wasn't worked out.

The big mistake with Reyes, in hindsight was not trading him for more value than the #35 and #71 draft picks (bout 2.15 million to spend). Now, that 2.15 million is nice. That might be the equivalent of another Fulmer and Mazzoni, or a bit more, but they could have gotten a lot more than that if they'd traded him.
