Changes the Mets need to make:

- Get Thole healthy and in the lineup (and keep Rob Johnson around to hit)
- Get Tejada healthy and in the lineup
- Clone Mike Baxter

If we have a cloning machine, can't we just make a few more David Wrights and Johan Santanas while we're at it?

That would be too obvious.

We don't want to show all our cards at once.

Again, the Jays would have interest in Murph because of the following reasons:

1. He's about 4-5 younger than Johnson
2. He hits about 35 points higher than Johnson for his career
3. He makes about 6 million dollars less.
4. The Jays could play him at multiple positions (including DH)
5. Johnson is a FA after this year[/quote]

Reasons 1-3 are exactly why the Mets should keep Murphy. He is young, hits .300 and does not make any money. I don't get why people keep wanting to trade him?
Makes little sense to me.

Again, we've already beat your fourth point to death: Murphy's bat doesn't play at first or DH, and the Jays already have a great young third baseman. That relegates Murphy to second, where he's less than a sure thing, as we know. You're cherry picking batting average, as Johnson brings a lot more power and patience to the table, as well as a bit more speed. Moreover, Johnson has proven that he can play second, something Murphy has yet to do. Also, Murphy hits arbitration this year, so that price difference is only so dramatic for this year, when they already have Johnson at the position.

Essentially, for your suggestion to work, the Jays would have to envision Murphy as their second baseman of the future and be willing to ditch their current, solid second baseman for him. Also worth noting is that with the new draft rules, they have little incentive to let Johnson walk for nothing. Finally, Murphy's knee problems and defensive issues are likely to be exacerbated playing on turf everyday.

As nice as it would be if that were realistic, you're basically banking on your opponent reenacting Pickett's Charge if that's a centerpiece of your plan.

You bring up several valid points, but some of your reasoning is flawed. Here's why:

1. If the Jays let Johnson walk (which they might), then Murph could play 2nd for them next year

2. I'm not sure how much you think he's going to make in arbitration, but chances are it won't even be half what Johnson makes.

3. The Blue Jays aren't getting anything out of the 1st base position offensively this year, so Murphy's 300+ avg, ability to hit 35-40 doubles, and knock in 70-75 runs would actually be an upgrade for them.

4. Murphy doesn't strike out 150-160 times a year, so although Johnson is barely a bit more patient than Murph, he also doesn't make contact at an ALARMING rate.

5. I initially had Murphy in the deal with the Reds (if you read my original post), so I'm defending a trade that could work, but ultimately one that wasn't necessaarily designed by me.

6. When you bring up the notion that I was making up "video-game" trades, it's insulting. Dickey (a legit #3 starter), Rauch (a decent middle-reliever), and Valdespin (one of our Top 10 prospects) for D'arnaud probably doesn't get it done, but it's not video-gamesque.

7. I'm done defending my position(s). We clearly disagree, so let's just leave it at that.
