Depending upon the return, I wouldn't fault them if he made no demands.

I think we're going to be still talking about this well into 2013. Before I think of extending him for any years, he has to show improvement in the home run department, regardless of what his slugging pctge currently is. Also since I don't usually have a chance to throw in Sabrestuff, his WAR is only 2.6.... Only .1 higher than it was last year when he had his worst year as a Met.

Edited to add : his Owar is 2.6, his overall WAR is 2.5 so far.

WAR is cummulative; that puts him on a pace for 8 WAR for 2012. And fangraphs has him higher, at 3.2 so far, a pace for over 10 WAR.

Not that Wright can continue that pace, but if he could, it would be worth $30M+ per year.

Ha it was a good effort.

To put things into perspective, no one has had a 10+ fWAR season since Bonds in 04. Wright has been pretty good this year.

Well he is hitting .370/.470/.570. That can't continue, but would obviously be a career year if it did. Realistically though, he really could be a 5-6 WAR guy right now, and would maybe taper off to a 2 WAR guy by age 35.

This is the same storyline that happens with every contract/extension. Player wants 2 years more than seems reasonable. Team wants 2 years less. The issue is whether they can agree to settle in the middle or one has the other so far over the barrel that they don't have to budge.
