I think we're going to be still talking about this well into 2013. Before I think of extending him for any years, he has to show improvement in the home run department, regardless of what his slugging pctge currently is. Also since I don't usually have a chance to throw in Sabrestuff, his WAR is only 2.6.... Only .1 higher than it was last year when he had his worst year as a Met.
Edited to add : his Owar is 2.6, his overall WAR is 2.5 so far.

WAR is cumulative.

Well he is hitting .370/.470/.570. That can't continue, but would obviously be a career year if it did. Realistically though, he really could be a 5-6 WAR guy right now, and would maybe taper off to a 2 WAR guy by age 35.

This is the same storyline that happens with every contract/extension. Player wants 2 years more than seems reasonable. Team wants 2 years less. The issue is whether they can agree to settle in the middle or one has the other so far over the barrel that they don't have to budge.
