Why would I be upset with trading "C level" prospects? In fact I probably only have about 8 guys I wouldn't be happy trading. Just doesn't make sense giving up real talent for bullpen help.
It can, if your club is truly complete save for the pen. That doesn't apply to these Mets, however.
To be clear I meant with the 2012 Mets.

The problem is that our C prospects that we'd consider trading are probably identified as such by teams with pieces we'd like.
I don't think Lutz and Owen are going to return anyone useful...I don't think we'd trade Byrdak for someone else's Lutz and Owen.
And I would not relinquish any of my top 15-20 or so guys for a reliever in a season that is probably less dependent on the strength of the bullpen than a lot of folks think...
I think that more likely, our higher level C guys are going to be rif-ed to make room for the minor league movement.

One or two small creative trades at the deadline to add bullpen arms would be a welcome change from the past few years. I don't even care if it's any kind of major move, but at least it's a sign to the team that the FO is attempting to improve the team for a playoff push, even a little bit. That doesn't mean I trade Familia for Lidge, but at least look into smaller moves for good arms.

I do think a ton of bullpen arms are going to move this deadline. More than the past. With the new CBA it makes less sense to hold on to them since you won't be recouping those easy sandwich picks for guys like Byrdak.

Was mentioned that Rockies could trade Betancourt and Belisle at the deadline.
Would LOVE Belisle. He's quietly been good for a few years now. Can even give you two innings if needed (was a former starting pitching prospect for Atlanta way back when).

Flip side is way more teams "in it" less likely to dump.

Yea, I think that will have a large effect on overall prices, driving them up, while the price for relief pitchers rises relatively less and could be about the same as previous seasons. Going to be much easier to nab a reliever than say a second baseman.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out. There's pretty much zero incentive to hold on to solid, unspectacular types in their walk years, relievers or otherwise, if you're out of it. Previously, the Mark Grudzielaneks of the world might not have been moved, as they could garner a supplemental round pick the following year. Under the current system, you really should go into full-blown fire sale mode if you're out of it, dumping every free sent to be for a live arm, as there is no longer a return on middling talent via draft picks. I could see more teams standing pat, while those that are clearly out of contention dump like we've never seen before.

From my standpoint, no. But it is one of the more interesting ideas. Righty, under control for one more year.
I think the backlog of outfielders/infielders would require some interesting maneuvering, and I am not sure the Wilpons are adding any payroll down 2000 fans per game.
Lastly, the Padres are going to want a similar return to what they gave out, which was two well regarded prospects (3rd and 17th in the Sox system after the trade--Castro was 3rd in the Padres system before the trade)...
Think Famila/Harvey, then McHugh...
