I think we need to pump the brakes a little bit here.
While I agree that Murphy has been very disappointing, let's remember Valdy's hot night last night pumped his avg/OBP all the way up to .184/.205. This is prior to the inevitable league adjustment that will occur as he gets more time out there, as he is a guy that WILL get exposed and adjusted to, as he has many many holes.
There's no reason to be satisfied with how 2B has played out so far this year, especially offensively, but any upgrade is likely not coming internally.
I'd agree with Mark. No way do you start 'spin after one good night. Murphy's slump is a couple weeks old. He will come out of it, and he will hit some home runs this year.
I agree w/ those pointing out Valdespins' power & speed advantage over Murphy. And I love Murph...he is a true Met to me.
Reminds me of the guys they had in the early days of the club. Hard worker, grinder, a "ballplayer" who'll be remembered as much, if not more, for his legendary adventures with the glove than any offensive heroics he's had here & there.
But as long as Ike & Bay are not providing the power they're supposed to, I believe Valdespin actually offers an upgrade at this point.
And as far as commitment goes long term, I'm not thinking past this stretch of the season.
Flores is being worked at 2B in the minors, & as much as I like Reese Havens, ( I live down the road apiece from where he's from), I'm thinking his ship may have sailed.

Valdespin hasn't even hit AAA pitching well yet, .269 .309 .394 this year and last wasn't much better. Doubt he'd even be able to replicate Murphy's slow start. At least Murphy has hit at this level before and is still getting on base at a decent clip.
At this point it doesn't look like either of these guys are the answer. I'd rather hope that Murphy gets the lift in his swing back while we wait for Wilmer or Reese or maybe even one of them trade things. Once Ruben and Cedeno are back Valdy should probably be down in AAA proving he can hit pitching there first and foremost.
