One thing you are forgetting: The Wilpons could not afford to sign Beltran and as it turns out Reyes too. I think Mets got lucky having Tejada and Duda taking their spots in the linuep. Those 2 guys make near the minimum compared to Beltran and Reyes who make 20 times more.

Now I am not or the what ifs but that is a little silly. A Kirk, Carlos and Duda outfield is not too shabby though I am still confused how the team would try to get rid of Bay. At least with Murphy trading him for bullpen help would have been plausible.
