The Mets talked with the Chicago Cubs recently about acquiring catcher Geovany Soto, but a deal is not likely, a baseball official with direct knowledge of the situation said. The Mets could also have traded for Colorado catcher Ramon Hernandez and Boston’s Kelly Shoppach, but could not agree on a price for either.
The team could revisit talks for Soto or another righthanded-hitting catcher in the offseason, the source said.

No thanks. He's declined similar to Suzuki.

This could have been before the Mets totally fell out of contention, which matters.

What happened to him?

It doesn't help that his BABIP is just .209 this year. There's also nothing in the peripherals that show he's declining or making incredibly weak contact to support that kind of BABIP. He's only under control for 1 more year but I'd be very interested in him as a buy-low target either now or in the offseason. He's worth taking a shot on.
If there weren't any real cost, I'd certainly go for it. Soto at least has a chance of regaining his form and being good versus left hand pitching, whereas Nickeas/Johnson types have no chance whatsoever of being productive.

We should probably think it over for about 12-18 months, though.
Metsblog headline: "Mets may look for catcher this winter."
That headline perfectly captures the roster management and/or transaction philosophy around here. "We might do something, but in the future, and don't hold us to it..."
"...and don't forget about Magic Mike Nickeas getting back on track down in Buffalo."
