Its dang close. I'm confident Bay will make up the difference in the next 54 PAs.
Like a lot of us, I like to think strategy along with the manager and it's crossed my mind on more than one occasion that the best way to manage Bay, hurt feelings aside, is to manage him like a bad-to-mediocre hitting pitcher.
Last night, when Bay came up with a chance to blow open the lead and actually stung the ball, they showed TC in the dugout at the railing. I was wondering if it crossed his mind to have Hairston pinch hit for Bay.
I knew he couldn't really do it because there would be no going back on the relationship with Bay, but it had to cross his mind that in terms of giving him a chance to win, Hairston was an infinitely better bet.

Oh come on. He was pinch hit for by freakin Valdespin....I'm sure Bay would have been fine with the RED HOT Hairston pinch hitting there.
On a side note, I don't care about the "relationship with Bay".

Thats not true though. He pinch hit Valdespin and Turner for him in Washington in big spots down runs late.
I don't really know how TC is managing him. Its odd though. I've said it before, but because we have very odd precedent in Batista (lets play him more and give him more responsibility before we send him packing), I'm hoping that is what is behind the "We're going to pretend like Jason Bay isn't 6 for his last 68" run we have going here.

It is interesting to note though that as they are obviously conscious of trying to prove how valuable Scott Hairston is to them to justify their decision on him (clearly, they are aware of the talk around the game there), he falls into a category of "Too important to trade, not important enough to play over Jason Bay, or even replace him late."

I'm not sure if this was the case before the game last night...but as of right now, Niese has a higher wOBA than Bay.
Valdespin could be justified with the righty-lefty matchup.
And with all due respect, it doesn't matter what you, me, or any other fan thinks ab out the "relationship with Bay", the people involved have to live it on a day-to-day bas is in a dynamic where interpersonal relationships matter.
This just doesn't extend to baseball or sports in general, but there are times when a person in a managerial position has to show faith in his subordinates or colleagues more for the long-term impact than for the outcome of the moment. If the immediate outcome is good, all the better.

I also think the fact that it was a 2-1 lead entered into the equation. Would 4-1 or 3-1 be better? Of course. But the worst-case scenario was you still had the lead with 3 outs to go.

Don't look now, and I was one of the most vocal critics of the signing so this isn't an "I told you so!" by any means, but Jon Rauch may just be our best reliever at the moment.
He's been a lot better than I thought he'd be but he still doesn't hold a candle to Parnell.
