Petey: You were hitting very well at St. Lucie at the time of your promotion to Double-A. But once here, it seems you started to really heat up, and started out in Double-A very strong. How were you able to do that?

Wilmer: Just having more concentration and just having a plan, and trying to get my pitch. Last year I would swing at a lot of pitches out of the strike zone. I’m just trying to get my pitch man, and drive it.

pretty good interview ..seemed like Wilmer has a good idea of what he wants to do at the plate and is really maturing. I think this year was a huge confidence booster for him as he was only 20 years old most of the season and produced at a pretty high level. I think he takes the next step next season ..and starts to really put up the power numbers (20-25 home runs).

Too bad he can't play the OF.

One of my best friends coached Division I college softball and he never limited his recruting of girls who played shortstop in high school and summer ball.

His belief was they were usually the best (or among the best) athletes and you could convert them to other positions.

Obviously, there's a big difference between MLB and college softball, but I think the analogy applies that Wilmer should be able to learn to catch a fly ball if he was good enough to sign as a shortstop

Chico,
Wilmer is graded as a 30/80 speed wise. 50 is league average. Scouts said he looks like he runs with a broken leg. Catching the ball isn't the problem... getting to the ball is.

The negatives with Flores, are in foot speed and athleticism, and as a result, fielding ability. Flores has not yet grown into his body, and at times shows lack of coordination while in the field. His lack of speed makes covering the ground at shortstop, or in the outfield, a difficult thing for Flores. He has a good arm, adequate for 3B, but many feel he is destined to wind up with 1B as his landing spot one day. Up to this point, the Mets have been hesitant to move him off shortstop, but this winter Flores has been playing 3B in the VWL, which could be where he starts out next year.

30 speed at 20 likely means he will be David Ortiz-esque speed wise as he fills out further.

Speed: Has slowed consistently since signing. Well below-average runner that may still slow half a tick as he reaches physical peak. May not play below that grade. Has solid base running instincts and shouldn’t be an overt problem when running. Grade – 30/30

I think people ignore the fact that a Lucas Duda is a way better athlete than Ike Davis and a Wilmer Flores, yet that never stops folks from suggesting those 2 go to the OF at some point.

Abomination might be the apt word.

I think if you want to "realistically" think out of the box that 2b is far more realistic for Wilmer than OF. At least at 2b 1) We already have a subpar defender 2) Wilmer has good hands and a good arm so hypothetically you could stick him there.

What's your basis for the assertions in this quote?

+1

Thebaseballcube insinuates that Duda and Flores are actually quite comparable, and that they are both significantly "speedier" than Ike
