why should the mets focus on other serious needs when they can focus on non issues like Ike and Murphy. They, after all, are the reasons this teams awful...obviously.

Ike, even with his off year is the only HR threat we have. This includes Wright.

This Sandy guy knows what hes doing. He has a plan.

Like Dr. Evil, its a pretty dumb one

I think Sherman is pretty much on the money.

The current state of the Mets reminds me of the old gag: "We're just a couple of players away....Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb"

There's way too much to fix in one offseason, especially for a front office that has fixed very little in terms of major league-ready personnel in two offseasons and one-and-two-thirds seasons.

I think they'll probably live with Ike and Murphy for a couple of important reasons. One is that there are other areas of the team that are more pressing. And the second is that both players make low salaries and have shown enough positives that you can justify keeping them and hoping the positives come more to the forefront.

With Murphy, you can hope his defense continues to improve (and it has improved this year), plus he's a hedge against losing Wright as the third baseman.

With Ike, you can hope he hits for average the way he did before this year and maintains the power he's shown, even though there's really as much evidence to think he's what he's been in 2012 as there is to think he's what he looked like before his ankle injury.

There is too much to fix in one off season. But the front office needs to make an impact move to provide the fan base with something to believe in. Another off season of minor tinkering will not do it. Another sub .500 year in 2013 will not cut it.

We have to stop handing guys jobs with no competition. Ike has been bad this year, as has Thole, Torres, Bay, Duda, etc. Nobody should go into this off-season thinking that they have a starting job locked up except Wright and Tejada. Lets replace the spring training complacency with some urgency for a change.

When scrubs like Ronnie Cedeno and Mike Nickeas show up to ST with guaranteed BACK UP jobs already locked upon day 1, that's even more a recipe for disaster.

I hope Sherman is accurate here. I'd hate to hear they are comfortable penciling in Ike Davis as our 1b going forward. As for Murphy, he has flaws but I think finding a clear upgrade is easier said than done.

I rather Ike then Murphy going forward

Ike has 20 homers, isn't that like top 5 out of first basemans?

He's tied for 8th in HRs

But he's also
18th out of 20 qualifiers in average,
19th in OBP
(the 20th ranked guy in both was sent down to the minors)
16 in OPS

Also
19th in WAR

All valid points, but Ike since June 9:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... g_gamelogs

51 games, 15 hrs 40 rbi, 15 BB 44 K, .266 .322 .576 .898 and .268 BABIP. (that's a pace of 48 homers 140 RBI . . . yeah, I know, RBI are meaningless, but 48 homers is cool)

he missed most of last year, for a lot of it he couldn't run with his ankle messed up, then he showed up this year with valley fever this year.

I wouldn't sleep on Ike just yet. I'm considering giving up on/trading Duda, but I want to stick with Ike.

Ike has had a bad year no doubt. But I am not ready to give up on him. I think the Valley Fever has taken more out of him then any of us know. If he is performing this way still a year from now then I think it might be time to look for a new 1B but until that happens, I'm not looking to replace him.

The Mets are not in a position to give up on a player who is able to play defense and can actually hit more than 20 home runs in a season. It's possible that Ike isn't the future, but I don't want to live in a world where we're pretending that it's okay to have some Slappy McSlapperson at 1B.

There are no less than four everyday positions (C, LF, CF, RF) + the the majority of the bullpen (how long have we been saying this?) that need to be addressed before deciding whether Ike and/or Murph need to be replaced.

I have absolutely no doubt Ike will be better in 2013 than he has been in 2012, but obviously that's not saying much. I think it's quite realistic to think a BABIP increase of 30 or more points is in store, which should help his average a little bit. If he can get that walk rate back up to where it was in 2010/2011 and put up a line of .250/.325/.475 I'd be up for it. I realize this is still not ideal for a first baseman, but with Thole providing very little offensively and defensively, no real outfielders for 2013 at this point, and the bullpen minus Edgin being mostly craptastic, it's certainly not something I think needs addressing before the three things I just mentioned.

As for Murph, I think he is exactly what he is. About .300/.350/.425. Not great, but a solid hitter and as long as he isn't killing the team at 2nd, there's no rush to move him out of here while there are other glaring holes on the team.
