BTW, does anyone actually know why Aoki would still be eligible for Arb if he's already been deemed a free agent in the past?

He's had contracts in the past that stipulated at the end, his team would release him, thereby making him a FA. He is not currently playing under such a contract.

Hmm, once a FA, it should make one ineligible for Arb in the future. Interesting that he can still avail himself to the process.

Not true at all.

The Mets signed Scott Atchison as a Free Agent, then non-tendered him after that season. Sure there are others, that one just stands out.

When guys get nontendered, they become free agents but remain in the arbitration process after that season. Justin Turner is another great example.

oh yeah, evidently arbitration trumps everything. it just seems weird that the control/Arb process can re-enter the pix even after player has been a FA.

Nothing's going to happen until they announce cuts and rule 5s. Then we have the winter meetings and maybe a trade or two. It's going to be quiet until after the WS.

It can change, but there are some things I'm curious about, but most likely won't happen

- Non-tender or tender/trade Harvey
- Keep Asdrubal
- Convince Wright to retire (have the FO role for him ready, jersey retirement next year, etc)
- Trade Dom Smith
- Sign Carlos Santana and Lance Lynn
- Wheeler to bullpen

I mentioned, I think in this thread that Wheeler could open the season in AAA. Gotta see how things go, but Wheeler, Matz, Gsellman all have options and not the good kind. Harvey has an option but he can refuse it and walk away from his contract.

Yeah, your top 4 are virtually no chance. Wheeler to the Bullpen, with all the bullpen arms they added, I don't see it, but it's possible.

Santana's an interesting idea but I don't see them spending on a 1st baseman. Close to zero chance.

Cards could resign Lynn, but I think he's as good a suggestion as any. I think the mets need to sign a FA starting pitcher.

Nimmo RF
Cabrera 3B
Conforto CF (yes, I know, optimist)
Cespedes LF
Neil Walker 2B
Dom Smith 1B
Amed Rosario SS
TdA/Plaw C

Bench will be Lagares, Flores, TJR, TdA/Plaw and Aoki

Rotation will be DeGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Matz and Jake Arrieta in a shocker (this is where they spend the money they didn't spend on the lineup).

Bullpen will be Familia, Ramos, Reed (who was bad enough with RedSox that those closer opportunities don't come to pass), Steve Cishek or Joe Smith, Lugo, Smoker, and Blevins.

Robles is sold, Sewald and Bradford are first callups from AAA. Goeddel finally cut loose. Harvey winds up being non-tendered after all.

Walker costs 3/35. Arrieta 5/90. Reed 2/18. Cishek or Smith 1/6 with an option.

There's your offseason. Not sure what that leaves the payroll at.

I don't think it's realistic that they would have $40M+ in payroll in the pen. So yeah I don't see that happening esp after they made a concerted effort to add a bunch of young pen arms.

The pen is basically the only place Sandy has gone on record saying they need to address. I know we all think he’s this master of misdirection but usually when he tells you something it’s pretty accurate to what happens.

I think we’re in store for a richer mans version of 2012 where the 2011 team had a million problems but the pen was glaring so we just threw a bunch of money at it for whoever would take it and declared the job done.

Oh I think they'll finally relent and address the pen but it will probably be more of a middle of the road Aldersonian version.

I now got something like this...

- Alderson does finally heed the bullpen call. I got them actually making a deal to acquire a late inning arm. The 3 targets I can come up with are Brad Hand, Shane Greene and Raisel Igelsias. Iglesias prob ranks 1st bc he's locked up for 3 more years, then Hand a close 2nd controlled for 2 more years, then Greene a step down from both and controlled for 2 yrs. I'm expecting they'll package Gsell to net one of these guys. He's a year from being considered a top 100 prospect by some in the industry. Even tho his year was a disappointment, he's still pre-Arb, throws 94 and induces lots of GBs. He's still got value. All 3 of those rebuilding teams would most likely have interest in a young SPer. So Hand or Greene?? I'll say they end up with Greene plus 2 minor league arms (the Tigers are suddenly pretty flush with young arms) for Gsell, Cheech & Monty. Gsell is too California laid back to be a SPer in NY, and he punched his ticket with the comments he made for which he had to publicly apologize.

- While that's going on, the Mets will be one of the few teams known to be pursuing Cozart and much the way the Zobrist pursuit went down, they will be the bridesmaid again as Cozart opts to sign with the Cards (Peralta is the better analogy I guess). The Cards will move DeJong to 3B. As a result, the Cards make Gyorko available. That's where the Mets come in. The Mets get Gyorko in a deal for AJRamos. Mets throw in a lower level arm to make it work... Harol? Gyorko gets 3B. ACab to 2B.

- Mets sign Tyler Chatwood to soak up those back of the rotation innings. 2/18M

- Acquire Daniel Descalso for Hansel Robles - Fits that LHed IFer need they currently don't have. DBs seem overloaded with MIers and DD is signed thru '18.

They prob add an OFer on a minor league deal (after letting Aoki go). I'll say that's Rafael Ortega.

Then after the calendar hits 2018, they will reassess what they have left to spend and will then do the usual RP wait out. Since they'll have some money left, they'll try to get another veteran RP to take their $4M offer. That could be Joe Smith, Swarzak, Cishek, Shaw, McGee...?

OF: Yo, Lagares, Nimmo, Scooter
IF: Gyorko, AmRo, ACab, Smith, Flo, Descalso, Evans [TJR DL]
C: TDA, Plaw
SP: Noah, deGrom, Matz, Chatwood, Harvey [Lugo maybe pen, Wheeler DL, Flex AAA]
RP: Familia, Greene, Blevins, Shaw?, Sewald, Bradford, Lugo [Callahan, McGowan, Smoker, Rhame, Bashlor all AAA]

Just to add, ending up Hand over Greene would really make their winter, needless to say. Don't know if the Mets actually have the piece to get that accomplished. Would def make sense to be aggressive in that pursuit. Pads obviously weren't able to get what they wanted for Hand during the season. Value is theoretically lower now. Not holding my breath but some team will prevail on that.
