I can see several teams where a subsidized trade could work. Apparently Sandy does not.

Cabrera and Tampa Bay, KC
Bruce in Colorado, Seattle, Chicago, Yankees, KC, Anaheim (if they are in)
Grandy in Chicago, Anaheim

Heck I could see Wilmer in LA!

I reallly want to hold on to and resign Bruce. He can hit, drive in runs, he is decent in the field, good basics, can also fill in at 1b, and hustles. I would rather lose Cespedes. He don't hustle at times , streaky hitter, lousy basics, and nothing special in the field. Bruce is slightly younger and he stays healthy.

With Cespedes struggling and this years injuries (plus $) there probably be no takers.

A's return for Alonso looks very disappointing. Boog Powell? That's considerably less than we got for Duda. That's probably what we're looking at for any waiver trades.

I never really expect much of a return in post-deadline deals anyway, so definitely not saying you are wrong about being underwhelmed by a Cabrera/Walker return...... but Duda should have gotten a bigger return than Alonso. Yonder has stunk up the joint for a lot of years, and a lot of people got a bit carried away with his value when he finally began to rake 8 years into his career (and it lasted a whole two months).

Duda and Alonso offer up interesting player comparisons, and despite very different prospect pedigrees, their careers have been almost completely in-step with one another since being drafted . The result? for all of Duda's maddening tendencies, he's vastly out produced Yonder, including a 60 point jump in career OPS.

I think you're right on the Duda/Alonso comp. I hadn't realized there was that much difference between them.

Still, Smith is an interesting prospect who could be a good relief pitcher for several years. I don't think Powell has the same upside. He had a good half season in PCL. That's almost giving away Alonso for nothing. The Duda return might have been disappointing, but some of the writers quoted scouts who had good stuff to say about Smith and said that the return was solid.

I don't want to sell anyone on that argument - been there/done that in other threads. But, yes, the return for Duda wasn't much but I think the A's got basically nothing. Boog reminds me of the return we got for Billy Wagner.

Wouldn't mind sandy looking at the waiver period and picking up someone like he did with reed. Bad year this year but it doesn't have to be sell mode only.

Also if a playoff team can acquire granderson for a fringe guy that's would be a solid pickup. Same for any of the Mets vets. If roles were reversed I'd be excited.

Did Matz clear? He has been nothing short of horrendous these last 5 or 6 starts or so with nothing in sight to show he's turning it around. Sandy better look seriously into using his resources to add at least two solid starters from outside the organization. Because I have zero faith that Harvey, Wheeleer, Gsellman,Lugo, and Matz are nothing more than 4th or 5th starters at maximum
