Bruce is a guy whose raw counting numbers - HRs and RBIs - make him look like a better player than he actually is. He really has one skill - power. Other than that, he's mediocre at getting on base (.318 career OBP), plays a hitting position, and doesn't run or field well. He's completely replaceable, particularly in an environment where power is plentiful and guys who get on base are rare and precious.

That being said, he has some value, and getting one long shot prospect is a poor return.

Puma and Olney now transcribing the excuses - ahem - rationale behind the Mets deal says the Mets are trying to save face with leaks about the process. Obviously the Yanks are fed up and have leaked enough details to make the Mets embarrassed here.

Wonder if the Yanks ultimately leak the names involved just to embarrass them a bit more.

Here's SB Nation's absolutely brutal, one sentence take on the Mets taking the Indians' deal over the Yankees':

"The Mets, who are not good and already know their 2018 financial commitments will fall nearly $100 million from this year's salary, chose a few million dollars more saved now rather than adding prospects they liked to the organization."

Seems to me this deal was more important to the Yankees than the Mets.

If anyone was motivated to go the extra yard it wasn't us.

I literally can not wait until the prospect names are leaked and I hope to no end that it embarrasses them.

Not a big fan of other names thrown around either. But it's too much to ask or expect that this front office will find a couple guys before they break out.

For some reason fans don't want Bruce. But we're going to be reducing out over all team power with Dom and Amed. At least for a couple years. If we go with a low power "true" CF and hang onto one of our current guys as 3B there won't be a whole lot of pop in the line-up.

I don't mind resigning Bruce. It's just that the indications are they are afraid to cut ties...we already hear they might be interested in bringing back Walker, Bruce, Cabrera and Duda...why?

One or two of the FAs fine (let's say Reed and Bruce), but they clog up the system with veterans and never see what young hungry players can do.

I don't think he's a below average RFer in any regard. I think he's a fine RFer with a strong arm. And he's certainly a + power bat which the position requires. Just bc HRs are up this year is not a reason to knock bruce in and of itself. Heck, people have seemingly been trying to find reasons to knock him for a while but the guy had a fine year. The Mets should have gotten 2 Ryder Ryans for Bruce at the minimum.

Come on. What do you think the Yankees offered?? If the Yanks offered Jake Cave and Luis Cessa, how embarrassed could the Mets be??

Let's find out shall we? And by the way, what would be wrong with Jake Cave whose the 20th ranked prospect in the Yankee organization and whose OPSing over 1000 in AAA?

I don't think there would be anything wrong with it. But everyone in Scranton are putting up Vegas numbers so I take it with a grain of salt. Cave was unprotected for rule 5 two or three times. His K rate still looks way too high to make it in the majors so I'm not losing sleep either way.

What makes you think we'll ever find out? It's a bit counterproductive to float names of guys you still employ letting them know they were in a trade discussion, no? The Yankees may be mad at us but you aren't going to tell guys playing in your organization - by the way, we tried to trade you - if you don't have to.

The beat guys for this team are horrendous. How does no one press for more straight answers about ownership directives, etc. Instead they get played with answers like "Our goal was not to save money. It was to create opportunity for as many people as possible."
