Mets believe that the Yankees killed the Walker deal once they acquired Sonny Gray and used Walker's medicals as a back-out tactic.

DiComo
Mets, Yankees had a deal in place for Neil Walker on July 31, per source. The Yankees, who were active that day, backed off due to medicals.

Carig
That near deal Sandy hinted about with Yankees? Per multiple sources, it was for Neil Walker. Told Yanks backed off right at the deadline.

This sounds like the two owners don't like each other more than it being about the front offices. Most likely Hal refused to deal with Mets in 2016 and refused the money coming back.

And if the trade went thru the Mets probably would have wound up with this guy:

It sort of makes sense. I understand why the Mets are pissed about this. The second Gray was acquired, rumors persisted that Steinbrenner immediatly froze payroll. It looks fishy that after rumors come out that Steiny froze payroll, Cashman finds something wrong with the medicals.

Any final word on who backed out or wouldn't talk with whom first?

Mets wouldn't deal Duda or Reed to the Yanks? Or were they willing?

Yanks backed out of a trade (personally I think making another trade is an acceptable reason so I would give them a pass on that, though I'm sure it stung Sandy and the Wiponzi's some.

Was it the Walker pull-out that was first or was there other stuff? I know that there's dislike between the two franchises. I don't recall it ever being this degree of stuff going on.

In all fairness to the Mets, George Steinbrenner was once quoted as saying that he will not be happy until every seat in Shea stadium was empty. He also was responsible for stopping the mayor's trophy game the second the Mets started putting together a respectable team in the mid 80's. Plus, from some of the rumors I heard the Mets weren't too happy with the little shot Derek Jeter took at the Wilpons while they were gracious enough to honor him during his ridiculous retirement tour. They gave him a check to his charity and he basically joked "come on guys you can do better". Of course, this was in the middle of the madoff fiasco so the Wilpons weren't too pleased. In all seriousness, if I was a pitcher for the Mets I would have planted a fastball in Jeters chin for that remark, and then told him hey do you feel like making jokes now?
