Given the Dom Smith thread below I'm honestly curious since a surprisingly # of comments seem to fly in the fact of what I believe. This is based on offense since defense for both players (and 1b in general is hard to define).

Didn't vote since I do not think he will be Loney. I don't think he'll be Kotchman. Nor do I think he'll be Grace, Duda or Goldschmidt...

He'll be something different.

He won't be Cecil or Prince Fielder either. Let's just hope he's not Ed Kranepool. :)

As a floor it's tough to be disappointed in a 10+ year major league career.

I expect the ceiling to be much higher.

Found the perfect comp.

142 homers. .303 .348 .463 .811 over his prime.

or, maybe this guy. This one, I'm torn on.

https://www.baseball-reference.com/play ... gr01.shtml

during his prime: .296 .352 .436 .787 117 OPS+

Those numbers are about the minimum for a career I'd be happy with. Career 19.4 war player. Problem is, the mets drove him out of town and he had his best years with the Cards.

defensive comps don't measure up there.

Unless you are Keith Hernandez 1b defense is almost NEVER mentioned when judging a 1b. Outside of Hosmer because it was focused on vs. us in the WS who are the "plus" defensive 1b? Hard to even identify them. The question is about offense. Would you sign for Dom Smith to be Loney 2.0 with his bat for 5-8 seasons?

One thing this thread makes perfectly clear is that they certainly don't make nicknames the way they used to. My son is nearly 6'6" and if I referred to him as "High Pockets," he'd probably just look at me funny.

Yes on the AVG, OBP and other stats but only if they keep the current baseball because that would mean a slightly higher SLG. I think Dom can hit 15-18 with this ball.

Just for reference (since I know some people love old skool stats), from 2007-2013 Loney averaged:

.285 AVG
.340 OBP
147 H
74 RBI
44 BB
70 K
