I'm sure much to MJ>You's chagrin, Montero is pushing himself if he hasn't already into the #5 starter next year

He's still far from a proven ML commodity. You cannot succeed in the majors against the better teams when you constantly put men on base. Last nite he benefited from 4 DPs. How often is that going to happen? He's still not more than a depth option.

I disagree. He is steadilly finding his lost control. While he still throws some in the dirt, his location is getting better. He DOES have decent stuff. While still a work in progress, he IS progressing and that is what counts right now. Compare that to Matz, who has become non-serviceable.

Matz is a mess. He's lost his control and his arm slot. He needs serious work. At least Montero has come on and is looking serviceable.

Nice win, but I can't help but shudder thinking we just saw the 2018 lineup last night.

Optimism needed...I am thinking we will upgrade in at least one position (either 2B or 3B). If Smith fails, which I believe he won't, Peter Alonso will be on deck...

That being said, Mets must add a decent starter and at least one proven arm in the pen. AAA backup will be better than this year.....

Hoping we see a rebound in at least one of these three pitchers: Harvey, Matz, Wheeler. My bet goes to Zach.

Anything more than this would be a really present surprise.

Totally disagree. He's been much much better in that department since July with the exception of maybe one of his starts. He's definitely improving in that aspect. So yes he's becoming a real option at #5.

The ground balls were great to see from Montero ... combine that with his ability to get swings and misses and he might have a chance to stick in the majors.

he will have his chance to prove himself over the next month and a half

If this improved grounball rate is for real - he might be a really good bullpen option

I am hoping he can be and succeed as the fifth starter. That would cover one position that may not have to be addressed by a 38 YO scrub. I think the pen will be covered with a lot of good arms vying for two or three slots, including someone like Lugo, as the long man.

That's the fun of this year. Ordinarily they'd keep the vets playing to the bitter end.

In fairness to Montero, like some others, he hasn't been given this long a leash ever. Perhaps patience will pay off.

I would love to see the same given to Cecchini...

I still see him as 8th on the starter depth chart for 2018:

1) Thor
2) DeGrom
3) Wheeler
4) Matz
5) Harvey
6) Gsellman
7) Lugo
8) Montero

He might be able to move up to 6th by the end of the year ... but he won't crack the rotation if the top 5 are healthy (no .. i'm not giving up on Harvey or Matz yet .. they have way too much talent)

Given this depth chart, i dont think they sign anyone in terms of SP, unless we see some major trades. I would be happy with giving Flores the 2b job, and a free agency of Alex Avila/not pickup Cabrera/Resign Walker/Chishek/and a decent OF.

Obviously getting Cain/Mous would be ideal, but given the lack of top tier FA, competition will be fierce. Would not rule out Sandy wheeling and dealing this offseason. I could see Bruce or Grandy back, but i would buy low on a 1 year deal for Cargo and have Conforto play CF. JDMartinez/Upton are other options, but again price would be a lot. Nobody else really jumps out as being better than a Nimmo/Lagares platoon.

The other interesting option, is maybe sign Bautista on a down year and maybe giving them some flexibility to play 3b. I think youll see the mets experiment with TDA playing some 3b/OF this spring, especially if Plaw hits the next 6 weeks.

Bullpen should be Familia/bonafide FA/Ramos/Blevins.... and have everyone else duke it out this spring. Heavily lean towards Sewald being in there as the 5th...but everyone else battle it out for 2 spots, including the losing SPs battle (Gsellman/Lugo). i would keep Montero/Flexen as SP wherever either majors/vegas, with Montero/Flexen/Molina/Oswalt/Conlon Vegas rotation.
Robles/Smoker/ Edgin/ Goedell/Bradford/McGowan/Pill and bring Bashlor to camp and see how he does, probably getting a 40 spot. You might have 10+ P (with minor league FA) battling it out for the 2 spot in the backend of the bullpen.
