I know Oswalt doesn't have overpowering stuff but a big pitchability RHer who has had success at every level and induces a lot of groundballs projects to be the sort of depth SPer (at least early on) that the org just doesn't have... or has in short supply (Flexen). His FIPs from 2014 are 2.69, 3.06, 2.90 and 3.50 (5th best in the EL). Considering the lack of [real] SP depth here, Oswalt pretty much has to be protected.

He's also a nice dev success story of a guy who has made the long progression from prep pick way back in 2012. He's passed every hurdle. I'd love to see him get an opportunity... esp before guys like Milone, Wilk and Pill are recycled.

Exactly. Big durable kid too.

Oh, I agree he has a shot to be an innings-eating #5 starter in the majors.

I just don't think that's worth protecting over Guillorme and maybe Crismatt.

You lost me completely on Guillorme. What is the risk in losing a player who projects as a 25th man at best?

And while Crismatt *may* be worth protecting, I don't think they can do so at the expense of Oswalt (not that it's necessarily an either or situation), who will be a needed commodity by next season. Crismatt is a year behind that and it's not even clear he's a more advanced prospect. Is he someone who survive in the Phils pen an entire year? Anyone's guess. But it would be another situation of stashing a player for a year or more on the 40 before he can possibly help you.

Oswalt now leads the EL in ERA by a pretty big margin btw.

Anyone know how excited we should be about Juan Uriarte?

I think Guillorme has a shot to be a starter. Most likely he's Darwin Barney but still that's something. He's a better prospect than Oswalt.

Hits everything on the ground. Has like 3 XBHs in his life. That's not a ML starter profile. He's a 25th man *possibly*. You don't protect a 25th man over a possible 5th SPer. In any case, it's not a profile that any team is poaching.

Meanwhile, nice 9th inning rally but falls short.

Darwin Barney just played his 786th career game today. And there's a decent chance Guillorme has a better hit tool here.

Jeff Glenn has homered for Vegas tonight. The bullpen catcher is back on the active roster after Plaw's promotion.

He was talked up a bit post 2015, rough 2016 but even then I posted 10/2016

"Juan Uriarte (not giving up the ghost on him yet. 18 years old, 40% CS)"

BA liked him as well

"They should have another quality catching prospect making his way to the United States this year in Uriarte, whom the Mets signed from the Mexico City Red Devils shortly after July 2 in 2014. Uriarte isn’t quite as refined with his receiving as Sanchez, but he has a plus arm and projects to stay behind the plate. While he’s not a pure hitter, he has a good combination of plate discipline and power for a catcher. He controls the strike zone and uses the middle of the field, though he can get too pull-minded. He’s strong and takes an aggressive swing, hitting the ball with good exit speed off the bat and a chance for 15-plus home runs in his prime."

Well, as with most of these 16 and 17 yo scouting reports, the proof is in the pudding and Uriarte has hit in real games. Looks like there's a nice projection there.

Barring something surprising Sanchez is a "bust". He's been truly awful. "Catchers develop late" is an excuse people like to throw around despite HOW bad a player has been. Not trying to be cruel but I see some on twitter citing a guy like Brosher having 13 homers in only 198 ab's, that's wonderful but he's hitting .217 with 93 k's. Uriarte might be our #3 best C prospect behind Nido/Mazeika and lets not act like either of them are sure bets.
