I would assume that any of Reynolds, Cheech, TJR, Reyes or ACab getting removed from the 40 would be replaced with someone they bring in from the outside to plug into the IF; not for the purpose of adding an even fringier guy (Guillorme).

Again, tho it's not impossible that Guillorme becomes a Barney or Goins, it's not practical to protect every player who *might become* a UT player if things all work out. This really isn't the way to manage the process properly.

While I don't honestly have a horse in this race, you're underselling him with this "might become" a utility guy. He'll certainly become a utility guy with the glove alone - look at all the light hitting MIF types who forge careers. Wilfredo Tovar, who they carried for a few years, was a "might become" a utility type. There is a difference - I just don't think we need him on the 40 man if they're just going to keep carrying Reynolds as the guy who they use for literally no offense but plugs in defensively sometimes.

This is kinda the point - Reynolds showed a lot more bat in the minors and is a fringy UT player, who btw can also get by in the OF if needed. The batting profile we've seen from Guillorme thus far isn't going to make it in the majors. He's going to make Ruben Tejada seem like Daniel Murphy. I'm kinda surprised that he's got a few advocates.

I think they'll probably cut or try to trade Matt Reynolds to make room for Guillorme. Cheech is still an unknown who probably opens in AAA again next year.

How can you cut our starting LFer?

I don't agree with this. Reynolds is the one who showed a profile that would never work - high K guy with no power in the minors who shockingly couldn't carry over .400 BABIPs into MLB.

Guillorme shows a still flawed but much more transferable offensive skill set, and he has carrying defensive tools, which Reynolds doesn't other than being a better defender than Wilmer or TJ.

The guy that they want to see finally get an opportunity up here??

Yeah, I don't think they are cutting anybody specifically 'to make room for Luis Guillorme.'

I think Reynolds is outrighted and Cecchini is traded.

Not saying Reynolds had a sustainable profile for success, but Guillorme's is easily worse. Reynolds has twice the XBHs as Guillorme thru the same number of PAs. But don't just scout the statline. See video.

I also think Reynolds is a fine defensive player. He may not be an elite defender, but to suggest that he's merely better than Wilmer Flores is pretty laughable.

Again, this is not to turn into a defense of Matt Reynolds, but as a guy who regularly gets knocked for being nothing more than a 25th man, I can't wait to see the slamming of Guillorme.

What's more, it's funny seeing some of these arguments in defense of Guillorme (whether or not MJ is actually doing so) who's offensive arsenal seems to be the ability to take a walk and make weak contact, but many of the same people seem disdainful or perhaps skeptical of Nimmo's more demonstrated ability to get on base even if it proves out that he lacks power. I find that somewhat inconsistent.

Let me clarify.

Reynolds gets a look this September. But when the choice comes down to which AAA SS they want to carry on the 40 going into 2018, they'll take Guillorme over Reynolds. (Unless Reynolds hits .310 the rest of the way, then maybe they carry both and trade Cecchini - too many 2nd basemen. Or they trade Reynolds if they can find a team with an interest, Or perhaps they trade Wilmer or TJ. This is getting confusing. But whoever they trade, I think Guillorme makes the cut this November

I find my position on this incredibly consistent. I've said Nimmo is a 4th OFer, and similarly, find Guillorme to be a future utility infielder.

But that also would say nothing of the difference in pressure on the bat between a LFer and SS, which is substantial. So those that may see Guillorme as having the potential to be a defensive-minded regular but don't share the same projection on Nimmo would only be consistent if you felt they had the same defensive profiles...which they most certainly do not.

Also not sure what "more demonstrated" means here, as Guillorme has done better getting on base wise than Nimmo did in either his first or second tour of AA.

By demonstrated, I mean at the ML level. In >160 PAs, Nimmo has a .358 obp... still a small sample but it's beginning to look like he could a real tablesetter.

As far as position, he's clearly not going to unseat Yo, so may as well take LF out of the equation. So whether he plays CF or RF, he still appears destined to hit at or near the top of the lineup as long as he consistently gets on base. And if in RF, we can stop the collective gasp. He won't be the first tablesetter to play in a corner. Also from what I've seen from him in the OF, the talk of his weakness there seems to have been almost as overstated as it was with Scooter. He looks fine to me so far.

Speaking of Nimmo, I wish he could glom a little of Rosario's aggressiveness and likewise if Rosario would get a bit of Nimmo's patience, the result for both could be fantastic. Nimmo needs to turn up the aggressiveness a wee bit. Him looking at a 3rd strike yesterday with the bases loaded in the day game was sort of typical of his overly passive approach when you'd prefer to see him take a rip. And Rosario otoh, is like 0-2 in every count. dang. Cool the jets Amed.

And Nimmo's aw shucks thing is going to get tiring quickly too. He's having fun and is authentic now, but I'd love to see him get a little more edgy and aggressive. I think his ability to get on is real and there remains the possibility to layer on some XB pop. That's going to be fun to see.
