A new wrinkle to the 40 man stuff is something I hadn't considered until tweeted by TPGmets BUT Nabil Crismatt, Phil Evans, Victor Cruzado, Alberto Baldonado will all be FA if not added to the 40 man. Crismatt the most obvious "add to keep" of the group in my eyes.

The list (https://tpgmets.blogspot.com/p/minor-fa.html)

What's the implication of this? Having the right to be a FA doesn't mean a player automatically leaves the organization does it? It would seem that every team would have the same 40 man roster issue, which is that carrying an Evans on the 40 means not being able to carry someone else...

Side note: I wonder if Evans's 2nd half has opened more org eyes than his season did a year ago.

If the player makes it to FA he has the right to sign with any team. Teams sometimes sign extensions with players before it gets that far but the Mets also (unlike the Yankees) not known for offering "strong" minor league $ offers to players. Zero inside information but my guess is a guy like Evans 100% bolts if he hits FA.

While they can sign anywhere the mets will get first shot to sign the player to MInor League contracts. Cruzado and Baldonado resigned last season. I see little reason why they would change their minds this offseason.

Crismatt will likely want to resign so little reason to put him on 40 he's in Single A. Phil Evans has a better shot at a 40 man spot.

I would not put anyone on the 40 simply because they "might" leave or be selected. It's the value going forward in addition to the risk of them remaining vulnerable. Problem is, the Mets have a ton of veteran guys who are going to clog the roster off of the 60 day DL.

Crismatt, though a decent enough arm, is unlikely to cause a team to give up a free slot, and is likely safe. Oswalt has pitched at a higher level in the minors and likely might be bait.

Uceta, Bashlor, maybe Callaghan, Bautista are electric arms that could be stashed on a bad team that have major value going forward in the rebuilding of the Met's pen.

Bottom line:
I'd remove Becerra, McGowan, Taijeron, Smoker, maybe Goeddel, maybe Bradford, and try to trade Reynolds, Robles, Montero...

Callahan 1000% is going to be taken if not added. Not even sure adding him is debatable. He's exactly the kind of arm we'd be saying the Mets should take. He has limited overall upside but legit 7th inning potential and "soon". 51 innings 48 hits 17 walks 65 k's 3.00 era, and it's not as if he's old (will be 23 "all" of next season).

Uceta, Bashlor, Bautista and Callahan are all locks to be added.

Which is why significant and logical roster pruning must take place.

SandyCo has a difficult time decisively moving on from marginal players.

They might sign a lefty bullpen guy but lefty bullpen arms tend to be expensive.

I wonder (Purely hypothetical) if they're going to look at Conlon to be their 2nd lefty out of the pen. The beauty with him is he doesn't need to be protected, he can be rostered on April 1, or they can give Smoker a look and call up Conlon when needed.

Between Blevins, Smoker, Conlon and I'm guessing Roseboom passes through rule 5 untouched, considering how pricy lefty bullpen guys are - that might be what they role the dice with.

I figure, 3 maybe 4 max roster free agent signings (probably 3), so they'll have to get the 40 to 37 in November.

I've always loved a good underdog story. Go Mets (2018). I know an underdog when I see one.

I don't see Conlon as a great LOOGY fit. Pretty much all of them are FB-BB guys, which Conlon decisively is not.

I like Evans ,, this spring he looked real good playing 3b and in his first year of AAA he has been respectable at the plate. I just think he can help in the infield next year. He is a guy that some teams would look at as a utility guy.

Basically i agree with you, but I would like to see what McGowan has and use Bradford more to getter a better read on him. I don't think we would lose Becerra . Might lose Smoker,Goeddel and Taijeron though. I would also like to see more of Taijeron also.

Hopefully Wright sees the writing on the wall and calls it quits. Also DFA Reyes to protect another arm. Pill and Milone can also open two spots. Thats four more and Conforto on the 60 day dl.
