This FO has hired one manager.

Um. Sandy did an extensive interview while with the Padres about what he wants in a manager. They want experience. Look at the list of candidates the first time around. Or we just ignoring both sandys comments and recent history?

Sandy hired Bud Black (extensive MLB coaching experience over fellow finalist... Dusty Baker). He inherited Bochy.
The Mets interviewed Hurdle, Chip Hale, Bob Melvin, DeMarlo Hale, Dave Jauss, Jose Oquendo, Oberkfell, Wakamatsu and the one with zero experience... Backman . There is zero doubt Sandy Alderson values MLB experience. Whether that's a hurdle that can be overcome is another story altogether.

Interesting blurb that is related to the above discussion

"Bill James wrote a great piece a few years ago about the failure of Vern Rapp as a manager. Few managers have ever had the pedigree of Rapp. He had been around the game for decades. Numerous players who became stars in the big leagues swore by him. He was smart and intense and a teacher and all those other good things. And when he was 49 years old in 1977 he was finally hired to manage -- by his hometown St. Louis Cardinals, no less -- and he led the Cardinals to a dramatic 11-game improvement from the year before.

But, even so, the season was a disaster. He feuded with players constantly. He tried to enforce rules about facial hair and clothes and weight -- these were rules that Sparky Anderson managed to enforce with the Big Red Machine because he got the players to buy in. Rapp could not. He proudly announced that he wasn't there to be liked, and nobody liked him, and 17 games into the next year he called Cardinals star Ted Simmons a loser after a game (Simmons, apparently, had turned up the stereo after a loss) and got himself canned.

Bill's point was simply that Rapp had never played, managed or coached in the big leagues and, as such, did not know what he could do and what he could not. He did not have the fine understanding of what makes a clubhouse go, what buttons to push, what battles to fight, what wars can be won. "If he had just one year to sit on a major league bench," Bill wrote, "to bend his ideas to what he saw around him before anybody took a position on them, he might have been great.""

Chris
1:10 Bob Geren. On a scale from just find a new team to root for to just jump off a cliff, what should Mets' fans reaction be to this likely hire?
Keith Law
1:10 He's not Terry, which is an automatic improvement. What I don't know is if Geren will be better the second time around - if he learned anything from his failures the first time, like AJ Hinch or Terry Francona did.

Bob Geren took a perennial 90 win team (helmed by Ken Friggen Macha) and turned them into a vortex of mid-70 win mediocrity, never sniffing the playoffs.

But sure. He's definitely going to improve the Mets.

Bob Geren is the exact opposite of who I would want them to replace Terry with. He is Terry Lite; all of the ineptitude, none of the charm.

An obvious possibility would be former A’s manager Bob Geren, who served as the Mets bench coach until last season. Geren, who left to serve as Dave Roberts’ bench coach with the Dodgers, was hired by Billy Beane to serve as the A’s manager in 2007. He was fired in June of the 2011 season with a record of 334-376.

Geren’s time with the A’s was marred with injuries and a struggling offense and some issues within his clubhouse. He was publicly criticized by reliever Brian Fuentes and closer Huston Street at the time.

Former Mets third base coach Chip Hale, who currently holds the same position with the A’s, is also considered high on the Mets list. Current Mets bench coach Dick Scott has been mentioned as well. Also from the current staff, hitting coach Kevin Long, whose contract expires after this season and was noncommittal about his future in that role with the Mets, might be considered a darkhorse candidate.

As I realized/pointed out on twitter, Bob Geren is pretty much exactly in the mold, albeit aged a bit longer, of "Mike Matheny."

Ex-Catcher, No Personality, Nice head of hair, good looking older man. Checks all of the boxes.

I don't see Geren coming back. He specifically left because he wants to stay on WC.

I have an odd feeling its going to be McEwing.
