In all seriousness, no matter how much he loves being a baseball player, you have to really shake your head at this point and say what is it going to take for him to announce his retirement.

I don't know all the specifics, but if he retires, does he get all his money? Do the Wilpons get their insurance compensation? Is there some financial incentive for him to keep trying to come back? I've heard that suggested, but never anything close to confirmed.

I'd like to think that ultimately a compromise can be reached between the Wilpons, Wright and the Mets, but at the same time, if insurance is covering 80% of his salary, he's not costing the team that much. Just an off-season roster spot and if he really wants to come back, I think he's certainly given the team and the fans enough for us to respect his desire to try.

Officially "retiring" = giving up the contract. Though I imagine in that case there probably would be some kind of settlement reached money wise.

But if he's told he can no longer play due to medical reasons he could get the full contract without actively trying to rehab and return (and the Mets would get the insurance $). Prince Fielder is the most recent example of this - he announced mid-2016 that he would never play again but he didn't officially "retire". Mo Vaughn and Albert Belle ended their careers under similar circumstances. I'm not sure whether they need to keep him on the 40-man/60 day to collect the insurance $$ (Rangers kept Fielder on their roster for more than a year, but just released him last month). We also don't really know what goes into the medically unable to play declaration - based on what was written about how much pain he was in on a daily basis - it would seem he could get the "doctor's note", but there may be more to do it than that.

If an insurance company is involved, he's going to need a lot more than a doctor's note. He would have to visit one of the insurance company's doctor's and he/she would have to basically agree that he can't play anymore. Just remember one essential fact, the insurance company doctor judges whether he can play, not whether he can play well anymore. Worst case scenario is that he loses so much muscle mass that he's totally ineffective but is essentially healthy enough to get on the field.

I don’t think it’s that complicated.

But I imagine he is giving it an attempt to return from the surgeries. And willl stop if he feels it
can’t happen and/or docs tell him to stop.

There's no reason he can't show up at Spring training and make an effort to play.
When he see's that he can no longer do it on the ML level he can announce his retirement and they can plan a big day for him.

My gut feeling is that he won't announce his retirement until his contract is done. No matter what.
