2016 looks like an offensive fluke for Nido but strong defensive rep gives him a chance to be a big leaguer. Funny thing, he was drafted with a poor defensive rep and ++ potential power. Defense developed, power did not.

Kinda disappointed this didn't coincide with an Oswalt, Molina, or Guillorme callup

Of those 3, only Molina is on the 40. The other 2 may end up being added, but I don't know if they are done deliberating on either one yet.

In the meantime, Boyd please... now he seems to me a guy that the A's will plunk in the rule 5 draft when the Mets inevitably fail to add him to the roster bc they didn't want to make a hasty call on Becerra. :?

It wouldn't be hard to DFA Milone or Pill to make room for Oswalt. He seems like a no brainer to be added this off-season considering our lack of pitching depth.

I wonder if Guillorme would've gotten the call over Evans if Binghamton had already been eliminated. I get not calling him up now, though.

I think the ship has sailed on Boyd for this year unless an OF gets injured

Well, who is the backup at 1B right now? Matt Reynolds?

And there are still just 4 healthy OFers on this roster of 33 players.

Evans didn't seem planned. He expressed being surprised. Nido likely had more to do with him being on the 40 man and his team being eliminated.

Reynolds, Asdrubal, Evans... 1B isn't exactly a difficult position to fill defensively.

I'd prefer a look at Boyd over a look at Taijeron, too, but it's not a big deal. Neither is going to stay on the 40 after September so it's probably better that it's Taijeron.

Tomas Nido, C, Mets: New York hasn’t had much luck with catching prospects in recent years. Travis d’Arnaud, a former first round pick, has been injury-prone and inconsistent at the plate. Kevin Plawecki, the 35th overall selection in the ’12 draft, has hit well in the minors but owns a .206 big league batting average. Nido is a far less heralded prospect as a former eighth round selection who came with huge questions about his ability to stick behind the plate but he found himself in the Futures Game.

His defence has improved to the point where he should be at least average in the Majors. Nido’s offence — previously his calling card — has taken a bit of a step back in pro ball, save for a strong 2016 season. On the plus side, though, Nido still makes a lot of contact (11.6% strikeout rate in ’17) and has shown gap pop (21 of his 57 hits have gone for extra bases). This young catcher likely won’t be a star in the big leagues but he could develop into a reliable platoon or back-up catcher.-FG during the future's game

Yeah, I know someone could stand at 1B but this is a missed opportunity. And yes, I'd much rather see Boyd than Taijeron. But we could see both now.

Evans definitely wasn't planned. I'm wondering if we had waited until after Binghamton had been eliminated if we would've selected Guillorme instead of Evans.

We seemed very intent on not breaking that Binghamton team up. McNeil, Urena, and Mora all got calls to Vegas over Guillorme, Thompson, and Kaczmarski.

He'd probably play once every fifth day anyways. Better to chance him in the Rule V than add him to the 40 now and DFA him in the offseason. He's not going to be worth a 40 spot this offseason with Guillorme, Oswalt, Bashlor, Bautista, etc. all needing spots.
