I'm just going to say that I would take Wilmer Flores over Gavin Cecchini quite easily.

Wilmer Flores stinks. Sorry to be so blunt. I have no idea why some people are smitten with this guy. The Mets seem to glom onto players like this once in a while. Absolutely a one-dimensional player in an era where offense is fairly easy to acquire and 2B the easiest position to fill. He doesn't have the bat to play 1B. Great player to have to get 300 PAs coming off the bench that can stand at a couple of positions occasionally. Not a starting player.

Flores and Lagares are fundamentally opposite players. But the thing with a stellar defensive player like Lagares is that there is always the chance that he can make himself into a better hitter. The poor fielder however, never turns into a good fielder. I just cringe at the thought of the Mets giving 2B to Flores next season. That is going to be a nightmare.

I remember the winter Denard Span was a FA. Everyone wanted to sign him. He was coming off of hip surgery and that seemed like a silly idea to stick him in CF. Turns out that OF defense has been one of the Giants biggest issues. I think they are league worst OF DRS the past 2 seasons. Span has been something like -35 DRS. Since last season, Lagares has been something like +23 (in less than a full season of playing time). That's a difference of more than 50 runs from Span to Lagares. Defense matters.

LOL at comparing Evans to TJR. Evans has hit above .280 once in his minor league career. TJ never hit below .280.

Evans is similar to Reynolds in that he had one great BABIP-fueled season surrounded by a bunch of meh. Evans isn't the defender Reynolds is, though.

2B is the easiest position to fill? Huh?

Go look at the mediocrity that a bunch of teams are throwing out there at 2B and tell me that again.

Flores is an above-average bat at that position. He might also be a below-average glove, but sacrificing offense for defense at a few positions is okay (especially if we'll have Rosario at SS and Lagares in CF). I imagine 2B will be by-committee next year between Flores and TJ anyways.

I think people are just remembering how bad Flores is on the left side of the infield, where the Mets have tried to force him in recent years. On the right side he's not that bad, and an .800 OPS from a guy who's improved at the plate each year is pretty solid. If we trade him I guarantee he has a breakout year in the AL with a .850-.900 OPS. He's entering his prime now.

Evans strikes out less than Reynolds. 15% k rate in the minors compared to 20%. K's are Reynolds big issue. He's a good enough glove and he's got enough pop for a backup infielder but he doesn't make enough contact. Evans doesn't have that problem.

I don't think the Mets are high on Evans. If they were, they'd have given him a start by now. But whatever Evans turns into, I don't think Matt Reynolds is a good comp. Not sure who is a good comp. Evans looks almost competent at the plate. I'd like to see him get more opportunity.

Evans potentially has the better hit tool but Reynolds can at least taken SS.

Evans is a chubbier Donovan Solano. Maybe a bit more pop.

If Evans is that, he might be worth carrying on the 40. My guess is the mets won't keep him on the 40 this winter.

That they added Evans at all was a surprise...

Not to get over analytical, but they had a couple injuries and he was standard depth. No reason for a team to be short-handed in September.

The downside, they release him from the 40 and another tea takes him (unlikely, I think, but theoretically possible this move could mean they lose him).

The upside - they give a kid a look at the majors and they don't run the risk of playing d'Arnaud at 3rd again.

I applaud the mets for giving guys who've been in the minors for years a September look when there's an opening.

I didn't say it was a bad surprise, just a surprise. I am all for seeing what we have to push guys who should be moved along their merry way...
