“[Steinbrenner] is probably the greatest owner there ever will be in sports. He loved people and he loved his players. Anyone that puts on a Yankees uniform is family to him,” Strawberry said in an interview on WABC 770 AM, before filleting the Mets.

“He doesn’t turn his back on his players, like the other organization across town. It’s just the reality, it’s real. The players on the ’86 championship team, we don’t even deal with the Mets. It’s not Fred Wilpon, it’s the new thing.”

That new thing is likely in reference to the Sandy Alderson regime and their awkward relationship with the franchise’s most famous title squad. Former Alderson lieutenant, Paul DePodesta, famously said in 2011, “I’m tired of hearing about the ’86 Mets.” Those comments helped cause a rift between the Mets’ alumni and the current team, though Strawberry and company have shown up to various events, like last season’s 30-year anniversary of the squad.

This would be a much stronger argument if most of the members of the '86 Mets weren't trainwrecks any rational person wouldn't try to distance themselves from.

Well Keith and Ron are in the booth. Everybody loves Mookie. Hojo and Teufel have been coaches Gary is no longer with us. What more does he want?

I’m tired of hearing about the ’86 Mets.

He wants a paycheck. Plain and simple. I love when people say how great a person George Steinbrenner was. Just like the WWE's Vince McMahon, they are / were complete A-holes to their employees. For every act of charity you hear about them you will hear stories where they made their employees lives a living hell.

I'm well beyond tired of hearing about the '86 Mets. I feel like we get another version of this "The Mets don't care about us" aka the Mets have stopped constantly promoting a championship team from OVER 30 YEARS AGO (finally) every year.

And the vast majority of the guys doing the complaining are people that any organization, sports or otherwise, would probably want to have long ago distanced themselves from.

If Sandy is the driving force behind us finally starting the move on the last few years - kudos to him.

LOL. What is he mad they don't have the coaching staff made up entirely of 86 Mets??

Or did we need a 31st anniversary celebration this year?

And even Wally was in the system during the Sandy years till he was actively insubordinate.

Honestly there was much more of a (deserved) rift with the '86 Mets pre Sandy till about 2006 and the 20th anniversary than there's been post Omar and Sandy

I'm angry they haven't done right by Danny Heep!

Ron Darling, Keith Hernandez, are favorites; Mookie Wilson should have been treated a bit better, Teufel was given a long look. Maybe they look at Magadan for a hitting coach. They drafted Mazzilli's son. Hojo was given a choice to stay in the organization.

Not sure what happened with Ojeda. McDowell is in Atlanta. Others have never reached out to the Mets, really.

Backman is not nearly as good as HE thinks he is; glad he's gone. He, Dykstra, Kevin Mitchell are not guys I want around the Mets. I loved Straw and Gooden, but they were poster children for excess as young ones...except if they are spilling their hearts in prevention.

Same. Been burned out on that team for at least a decade by now. Enough already, but it's hard to get away from on a nightly basis.
