We all obviously know the situation with Wright. We know the options on the FA market - specifically Moustakas and Frazier. My question is, what route should we take?

At this point, even if Wright somehow returns, chances are it won't be at 3B. My guess is it will be some kind of platoon with Smith at 1B, which probably wouldn't be a bad thing IMO. So, in theory, that should free the Mets up to do whatever they'd like at 3B.

Moustakas is the best available FA this winter without a doubt. Frazier is the local guy and would come much cheaper. At the same time you have the possibility of Machado headlining the 2018/19 free agency class along with Josh Donaldson. Both elite 3B with Machado being young enough to be considered part of the young core going forward. The problem with this route though is that you're banking on signing guys that might not even make it to FA. That said, IMO they are both good enough to take the risk. If they go this route though and decide to wait, that means we're looking at one more year of Cabrera/Reyes(or both) or some other stop-gap.

Then there is the trade market. The top guy will probably be Eugenio Suarez from CIN. He's a rock solid overall 3B who just might get pushed out due to elite prospect Nick Senzel potentially being ready to make the jump. They could decide to wait, but if the price is right I'm sure they would consider dealing Suarez. There might end up being other options on the trade market but I'd imagine that Suarez would top the list.

So, which would you prefer? Is there any option that I missed? I suppose the only other option would be internal, such as a Cecchini or TJR(even though he'll most likely miss a good chunk of 2018 to start).

Just don't be the team stupid enough to give 9 figures (or close to it) for Mike Moustakas.

Apart from the obvious (don't give him 6 years-120 million), I'm really torn on this off season. I'm a hard no on Frazier. I don't believe in his bat. I'm a yes on Moustakas, . . . with reservations, for maybe up to 4 years 70. I'm not sure that gets it done.

Does anyone have an accurate system for judging when a player is going to decline. Speed guys are easier.

I'm inclined to try to get Mous, so, unless we're outbid, I think he's the way to go. I don't think we can wait till 2019 and those two guys are too unpredictable.

I don't hate Ascab at 3rd. He fields it well so far and his bat is league average. Mets have to make the Ascab decision first and I think they keep him. For the right price, I'd be happy with Mous. I might even pay more than most here. I don't hate 5 years 88.

and, I've always loved a good underdog story. Go Mets (2018).

Moustakas only meets 1/4 of the traditional aging rules and the lack of track record and very one-dimensional profile makes him a horrible bet to age with any sort of grace.

If the options are to give Moustakas' stupid face and career .305 OBP a 4-year contract or to live with Asdrubal for another year and then be a real franchise and sign Machado, Donaldson, or Murphy post-2018, the choice is really easy.

Yes.

Start buying those David Thompson jerseys.

Is Nunez even a free agent? If he is that's a great target to improve the lineup. If I'm the Mets I try to make room for 2 of the following 3 players....JD Martinez, Cozart, and Nunez. Unfortunalty, all 3 are pretty injury prone.

With Sandy's track record, i would expect something like taking a flyer on a guy like Prado. Marlins will be looking to dump payroll, he's coming off an injury, it has Mets written all over it. :-(

Prado is owed $28M over the next 2 years. I would think that knocks him from consideration.

Mets big mistake in 2015 wasn't letting Murphy go, it was letting him go for a measly 3/37. They'd be foolish to spend more than that now, for more years, on someone less talented.

As for guys to take a flier on, I'm wondering whatever happened to Brett Lawrie? If healthy, he seems a guy who might be worth giving a look. Whatever leg issue he had this year, I think he's a guy who when he's stuggling, his swing gets out of whack some. I think working with a good hitting coach, there may be more bat there than he's shown yet in MLB. And even in his worst season of 5 per B-Ref he was still worth over 1 win. Fangraphs has one year where he was below that, but that's driven by an unusually low defensive number for UZR that year, which doesn't seem to be supported by other defensive metrics. I don't think he was ever worse than a little below average.

He is. Been on four teams in the past two years. On paper at least, he checks off three boxes: plays third, can hit at the top of the order and won't break the bank.

Probably the best option, given the apparent current circumstances.
