Some part of the group that was given away would help if 2018 is supposed to be a contending year.

Even if they have better pitcher health, the bunch of maybes offense isn't getting it done.

So they should have kept everyone on the remote possibility of re-signing one of the 5? And so adding the future pen arms would never have happened. I think given those choices, they did the correct thing.

If you expected all these guys to come in and be Dellin Betances from the get, that's on you. How long you been watching this sport?

A long time. Can't recall seeing a team dump so much major league talent for a pile of crap with a few scratch off lottery tickets buried in it.

But go ahead and start attacking me personally as someone with no knowledge of the game. thanks

This is hyperbole. But if you trade for something like bullpen arms, the idea is that there is a high floor to counter the relatively low potential ceiling. If the mid-20's guys "need more time", thats not great.

Well, I don't know what you expect being someone who has been around the game for a long time if you can dismiss the entire yield of arms this quickly... as if it ordinarily doesn't take any time at all for arms to have ML success. Will all of these guys turn into impact ML relievers? Doubtful. But none of them?

The bigger indictment here is that this FO hasn't had any bullpen plan at all in 7 years, and the moves they made this season are a reflection of that desperation which finally caught up to them.

To me, that's where the angst should be directed. What they did with these moves is try to correct it. Whether or not it ends up working remains to be seen.

Possibly none of them.

Primarily I watch Mets baseball for entertainment. Winning is better than losing. Losing miserably as they are now is worst of all. On top of that looking ahead to next season and seeing no great hopes is also no fun.

It sucks to have 2/3 of a season of my baseball watching tossed out the window for no great return.

Promises of maybes sometime in the future don't excite me.

Would've been more appropriate 2-3 years ago, agreed.

Problem is the entire cupboard is bare, and we decided to go all-in on plastic spoons. I think that analogy works?

We witnessed the reality of the economics of baseball play out when we tried to trade non-elite talent under big $ contracts at the last possible moment. Teams aren't going to give up much for your players (even good ones) if they are going to have to pick up all the $ also. It's very difficult to extract value for these types of players these days. There are very few FOs run by dummies today.

Come on!! I've been getting sold on the tank since game 53 or so. Trade off the older guys, bring in younger talent. Retool in the off season with all the money off the books and compete in 2018.

You mean this isn't really happening? I'm shocked. SHOCKED I tell you.

Wait. What does the sell off of players on expiring contracts have to do with whatever they do or don't do this winter? Every one of those players you didn't want them to trade was going to be a FA this winter regardless of whether they played out the year in a Mets uniform or not.

Unless we're going with the "we can resign them in the off season" thing, it is easier to retain someone when they're already in your clubhouse.

Only marginally on paper - but on the other hand maybe they would have held it against the Mets making them sink the rest of their own seasons on the Titanic and not come back. If anything they probably appreciate the Mets giving them all a shot at the postseason.
