Which series was more brutal, this one or with the Cubs?
Does it really matter?

With every passing day, I am moving further into "back up the truck" territory. I get that it is September, but this is the big chance for guys like Lagares and Montero. The fact that they can't capitalize on this opportunity speaks volumes.
Nimmo, Plawecki and (gasp) Reyes have stepped up. TdA has shown that with the proper heat applied to his posterior, that he can perform better. Jake has been brilliant. Lugo has been OK. Rosario and Smith haven't had enough time. Because of injuries, I'd add Cespedes, Conforto, Syndergaard and probably Matz to the keeper list. I am not sold on either closer, none of the recent acquisitions have impressed me and several former "studs" appear to have fallen perhaps irretrievably, on hard times.
That's nearly half of the 25-man OD roster that will need replacing. I am thinking that having a year in 2018 that resembles the 2017 of teams like Milwaukee or the LA Angels might be a more realistic objective than trying to regain the NL East crown.

Lagares has looked good to me.
He's hitting .236 with a .646 OPS. He's having his worst offensive season EVER. Last 38 games he's hitting .213/.265/.323

This one, cause the cubs are a playoff team and hot right now.
I enjoyed the 5-4 loss. It was a tank in the standings but a respectible game overall just with a blowup by Ramos. The other two - better missed than watched.
2 hits for Phevans though. He might be the one plus to come out of the last few games, and Lugo pitched well.

Many people slammed it at the time and the Lagares "extension" continues to be a complete boneheaded move. I'd love to know who in the FO advocated for it.
Agreed.
That whole "Oh but his defense is soooooo good just plug him in and bat him 8th" campaign that like all of the Mets beat and some here pushed lasted like 10 days, huh? Like I've said, Rite of Passage every year late summer before we remember what that looks like. The defense stuff is fun, for sure, but watching that offense every day is painful.
Luckily for him that extension will set him for life, as after its up, he'll enter the Craig Gentry portion of his career.
The bigger issue is his health. The "Oh but his defense is soooooo good just plug him in and bat him 8th" is irrelevant when he can't play more than half a season. Even if you're in the camp that he's capable of being a starting center fielder in terms of performance - I'm personally on the fence - expecting him to actually be able to do that is somewhat akin to trusting Matz to pitch 200 innings.

I know the numbers, but I've also seen some hard hit balls end up as outs, better plate discipline, stellar defense, and decent speed and base running over the last month or so.
He's doing things that aren't showing up in his triple-slash that make me think he's a valuable contributor.
Lots of guys have hard hit balls count as outs. And they have weakly hit balls drop for hits. It's kind of a weak argument for "he's really doing better than he looks"

Lagares OBP second half is .265 so not to be snarky "better plate discipline" is ridiculous. You don't get "unlucky" over 38 games to that degree. He's been horrendous and for a guy known for being decent vs. lefties ie a guy you could platoon with Nimmo, he's hitting .224 vs. LHP. He's an overpaid 5th OF.
