Gary just made a reference to the numbers Met catchers put up this season which I mentioned in the IGT from yesterday. Lurker?

It's just a 89 RC+ (15th) or if you strip out the PH and 1B appearances, they go up a little to 95 or 12th best.

It's not the big problem area it has been relatively, since catching in general is scarce, but it's not as good as the raw numbers seem.

The last two months I assume, they both have picked up their game....And that has led me to at least feel like you don't have to throw money out at a veteran catcher...Our tandem looks like it will be just fine there.

Since Aug 1 (226 PAs tho I'm not sure if this counts appearances at 1B, etc), Mets catchers are a combined .851 OPS and 123 RC+, and 4th best in that time period. Yes, would be great if this is the new norm for these guys, but one can't really assume that.

Those are some pretty good numbers. .851 OPS is kinda awsome, even if it's a small sample size with a lot of September in it.

d'Arnaud's hit before. Small sample size - sure, but he's shown some skill with the bat. Minors too. He wouldn't have been a top 50 project with that.

And Plaw's never hit in the majors but he's often hit in the minors. It wouldn't be shocking that those two guys have turned it around. .851 OPS might be a bit much to expect but .750 or a bit better from them wouldn't surprise me.

What has the average team gotten from their catchers this year?

The Mets need to at least get that from d'Arnaud and Plawecki next season, in some way shape or form. Gary made a point last night they maybe they can stay fresh by somewhat sharing the job. Kind of how some hockey teams have found success with 2 goalies sharing time.

I still think they need to upgrade the offense somewhere, but after watching this season unfold I wouldn't be sad if they allocated all of their winter spending on pitching.
