Maybe they will. But the system had gradually moved up from 2013 when they were 16th, 2014 when they were 10th, and 2015 when they were 5th (according to BBA,) and Keith Law had them ranked 7th before 2017 began. Just because the farm system appears bad right now doesn't mean that it will be when these prospects graduate.

This is the ebbs and flows of the business. The Mets graduated two top 50 players this season. Systems can and do change quickly. A few deals and a draft can infuse a system with a lot of talent quickly. Heck, perennial lower tier systems like the Tigers, Jays, Phils and A's all actually look pretty good right now. I don't expect the Mets to acquire a top 50 player by trade, but a year from now after the 6th pick and a breakout or two and the system could start to look good again.

Reports on the college bats they have taken over the past few years are "shockingly awful". I don't think you are being fair regarding how many high picks they have "blown" its almost unbelievable to have such a poor recent track record. Since Sandy got here the following college bats were selected top 1 rounds

Cole Frenzel (retired), Danny Muno, Kevin Plawecki (1st), Matt Reynolds (2nd), Jayce Boyd, Richie Rodriguez (retired), LJ Mazzilli, Jared King (retired), Champ Stuart, Matt Oberste, Patrick Biondi, Conforto (stud), Eudor Garcia (JC), Tyler Moore, Michael Katz (retired), David Thompson, Patrick Mazeika, Kevin Kaczmarski, Peter Alonso, Blake Tiberi, Colby Woodmansee, Michael Paez, Gene Cone, Quinn Brody, Matt Winaker.

That doesn't even take into account a high pick on Gavin Cecchini and Justin Dunn + Milton Ramos. Really not looking to get into an "Omar" debate but the draft history in recent years really has very little to do with the "good" players or prospects on the team. People are advocating Peterson on draft pedigree (no issue there but it's not as if he's "done" anything yet). Dunn was AWFUL, Lindsay always hurt and apparently underwhelming etc etc. There is no taking away how good Conforto looked but outside of Michael Fulmer it's not as if they dealt off stud prospects to get to where they "were" what's the excuse? Jacob DeGrom was drafted 7 years ago, Syndergaard was a trade. Their recent draft history is very, very poor.

"ebbs and flows" downplays how poor their high picks have been. Ignoring 2017 (because these guys have played so little it's "impossible" to judge

Top 5 picks 2014-2016

Conforto, Ramos (sold to Baltimore), Garcia (released), Prevost (non-prospect), Tyler Moore (retired)

2015
Lindsay, Wotell (traded and has been terrible), Thompson, Szapucki, Ingram

2016
Dunn (awful season with bad reports and shoulder issues), Kay, Alonso, Tiberi (awful and tommy john), Woodmansee (beyond awful), Paez (one evaluator called him a "20")

That's not just bad luck. That's 15 "high" picks with a ton of not even "solid AA player" depth.

From an actual respected prospect writer

"Yeah I really have no idea

And it's even the supplemental and second round guys where you should find real MLB guys, It's across multiple territories too, though mostly SEC guys"

so this isn't just about promotions or trades.

There probably has been no one as critical of the team's drafting during this regime than me. There has been no equivocating about that.

All I am saying is that it can flip back the other way in a year. Of course they're going to need some things to go right for that to happen. On the positive side, they seem to have a nice intl pipeline of talent matriculating now. It seems like they have been doing a better job on that side of the org.

Oh well if the argument is "a year from now things could look far, far different" I totally agree. But I don't think anyone on here would bat an eye of they cleared out the scouting department in particular whomever they rely on in picking college bats. I mean they have far too many picks who absolutely blow right out of the gate. That's a scouting issue. Unable to hit MLB pitching? Okay. Unable to hit well at A+, yikes.

It feels kind of wrong putting a mid rotation upside guy who has barely pitched in the minors yet at #1, but this system is that bad right now, and that's how I voted.

BA's first mock has us take McClanahan.

Every time a conversation comes up regarding repeating BK I always think of Mr. Frenzel.

No one's playing.

They're all tied for 1st.
