I continue to not "get" Nido as prospect. The Mets certainly push him as such, though. He's basically they only one they give any AFL press to, despite him being one of the worst hitters in the league this year.

I don't get it.

Needs to way shorten his swing. The runways for catchers is so long that it's conceivable he'd have some value in a few years.

He's Juan Centeno with more power. If he bat works out at all, he's potentially a nice player.

I don't really know what we're pulling from Juan Centeno's game to make this comp, but its a weird one. They're completely different profiles. So yes, Nido has more power than Centeno (that literally puts him in a group of just about everyone in organized baseball).

Centeno also was never a prospect, and is still a guy who basically is on the fringe of baseball, as a guy who is a part time AAA catcher and 3rd catcher call-up in emergencies. So sure, Nido could be a Juan Centeno-esque player, and that would prove my point.

Nido and Thompson might well be those other people. They combined for 24 homers and 128 RBIs with the Rumble Ponies this year,

First, that line is not impressive split between two people, but even so, this is just a weird effort to cover that Nido doesn't have impressive numbers, so we combine them with someone else who kind of did OK.

I mean, did you also know that Nido and Giancarlo Stanton combined for 67 homers and 192 RBIs this year!

Nido is like the next coming of Drew Butera.

I just don't get the excitement over a catch and throw guy, minus athlete, who can't hit.

Drew Butera may be taking it to an extreme, but this must've been what Rene Rivera looked like as a prospect, no? Everyone always talks about Nido's "raw power" and I've seen Rivera hit some bombs too - but there's a reason why these guys don't hit more than a handful in games, because the offensive skill set overall just doesn't allow for consistently good work there.

I guess if everyone really enjoyed the last 2 years with Rivera, that would explain Nido-excitement as Plaw and TdA don't really give you what Rene did.

I think the strong contact rate has some giving him a very long leash. It kinda means there's reason to give him a moderately high floor if the catch and throw ability are also there. If he can ultimately tweak the swing to get something out of it remains to be seen.

Jesus Montero was a Top 10 prospect.

Now I bet he wishes he had Drew Butera's career.

I think he's a decent athlete, for a catcher anyway. But I think some are maybe giving too much credit to last year, when he did hit in A+ ball. While I think the AA performance is probably a much stronger indicator, for a guy who was already 23 this year.

But people don't want to let go of the hopes they developed a year ago. Plus, he's still on the roster, since they have no other good candidates to shuffle back and forth as a 3rd catcher.
