Carig's dropping all sorts of nuggets, 280 characters at a time.

Says the sole focus is pitching. They will carry 8 relievers and pull guys before the 3rd time through the order (other than Noah and Jake).

Juan lagares will be in CF. They will not address the lineup other than a few versatile guys they can shuffle around.

This looks like a great plan for a really bad team.

So we're going to do what all the cool kids are doing! Yay

It would be a stunning upset if #Marlins OF Giancarlo Stanton is traded anywhere besides the #Stlcards or #SFGiants. They each have the money to pull it off, and Cards have loaded farm system, if necessary

Except he has no trade rights and has not-so-subtly indicated he wants to go to the Dodgers.

The Giants have a bad farm system and I'm predicting they have no shot to get him. I'm sorry but if Jeter ends up just salary dumping Stanton he's going to look really bad. Our worse fears are going to come true this year. Otani and Stanton will either end up in the Bronx or Philly.

too bad half of those 8 guys will be Robles, Smoker, Sewald and Rhame who keeps autocorrecting to Shame, accordingly.

Should be fun listening to the booths commentary on this.

It absolutely does. If Carig is actually plugged in, this is going to be a disaster.

After the big 3: Familia, Ramos, Blevens

There's on the 40:

Bradford, Callihan, McGowan, Rhame, Robles, Sewald, Smoker.

and starters who could see pen time

Montero, Gsellman, Lugo, Molina(?), Flexen(??)

and guys not on the 40 who might get a look:

Smith (Duda trade - might be close), Uceta, Bashlor, and possibly, Knapp, Peterson, Regnaut, Logan Taylor, Corey Taylor, Conlon, Secret, Roseboom, and 1-2 others I'm probably overlooking.

There's lots of names and they only need to fill 4. maybe 5 spots. I think they might be OK by committee.

Now, I'm not saying don't sign anyone, but I don't see the gaping hole in the pen that others see. I see bigger holes elsewhere (starting pitching/OF).

Ugh I get you can't exactly rely on the likes of Harvey, Wheeler and Gsellman for length but this just isn't sustainable over a full season. It isn't even really sustainable in the playoffs much less over a 162-game schedule (and that's with actual good relievers and not the mediocre junk we have). The Dodgers' great bullpen went splat in the WS and the Astros basically made their second-tier starters their bullpen cause the actual bullpen stunk it up.

But hey they traded for nine million relievers in August so there's that :P

I think Carig might be presenting this wrong.

It reads to me like the Mets aren't going to count on more than five or six innings from any starter outside of deGrom or Syndergaard (which is probably a good assumption).

I will say tho, that there could be more utility gained here by allocating most of that $30M to the pen then elsewhere. There was an 8 fwar difference between the best pen this season and the Mets. Between that and just keeping players on the field, that could easily mean a 15-20 game swing.

How much would the mets realistically need to spend to make up 8 wins by the pen? - to have the best pen in MLB, what would they need to do? Addison Reed and Mike Minor? 60 plus million on those two? 20 this year alone. I mean, maybe it's not a bad idea, but that's about what they'd need to spend to push their bullpen close to 8 wins better.

Lefties - Minor/Blevins
Closer - Familia
Setup - Reed
7th inning - Ramos
Other 2/3 / Lugo/Sewald,Callahan . . .

Not bad, but they still need a starting pitcher and an OF or OF/1B.

'Twice through the order' is basically Rich Hill (4 IP) postseason territory. That's become the new buzz phrase in baseball, first it was can't go past 100 pitches now it's can't DARE have a starting pitcher face batters a third time!

I could picture the Mets trying a faux-Astro postseason approach and filling out their pen with the marginal starting pitchers to try to piggyback on the Harvey-Wheeler-Lugo/whomever contingent and as a side benefit of spending no money on the pen. They already have an irrational attachment to keeping them all and giving guys like Montero chance after chance as it is, this is just another excuse for the do-nothing GM to do nothing.

This is partly what set up the Mets 2017 for failure. We were in mid-May and starters were averaging 5 innings a game and the bullpen was shot. You just can't expect 8 guys (or spots, since the guys will rotate in and out) to cover 600-650 innings.
