As I've posted before, I think there's near zero chance that Bruce signs here. But it would be nice to have at least one corner outfielder who gives AF to root for so I'm all for it.

Why?

Just a few months ago, Bruce said he wanted to stay here. We need an OF having just 4 on the 40 man roster and we could use another lefty in the lineup (Just Conforto, Nimmo, Smith and switch hitter Cabrera currently) and Conforto's coming of surgery and Nimmo/Smith might not be ready for prime time.

Now, you may be right, but I don't see why Bruce would be no chance. They'd be silly to not at least consider him.

I think they should consider him for sure. I hope they do.

I just don't think Bruce chooses to play in NYC unless absolutely blown out of the water. Just strikes me as a guy who would prefer not to play in NYC, regardless of what he said. Everyone says that, don't they (to keep NY teams in the bidding)?

MLB teams that have inquired on FA outfielder Jay Bruce say he’s seeking a deal for 5 years in the $80-90 million range.

I feel pretty confident we're not going to sign an OFer if these are the prices.

Ahh see we have already entered the “FA PRICES SRE RIDICULOUS” phase of the offseason. Didn’t even have to wait until the Winter Meetings this year.

Just the reality of the Mets orbit. Prices for FA are what they are, and for an ordinary big market team it shouldn't matter. But of course, when they go where Bruce is looking, the Mets ownership will always bow out.

I feel pretty confident that he's not going to get anything close to that, assuming that last year's contracts for sluggers are any indication. He'll probably get 3-4 years at about half that AAV.

A lot of the players who would have had QOs last year don't have them this year, which might help with free agent signing amounts, but I agree, there's no predicting it. Sometimes (more often than not) the market is rich and sometimes the market is stingy.

I called Bruce at 3/36M but he'll probably get a 4th year and also probably better than 12M per. Rethinking it, I might project 4/56M.

Yeah, the Granderson contract seems a fair comp.

In both terms and performance.

So, we couldn't get an old pair of shoes for Bruce but now someone's going to give him 16m a year for 5 years?

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports writes that the Cardinals "are believed to be the team the Marlins would most like to make a deal with" in the Giancarlo Stanton sweepstakes.
Peter Gammons of GammonsDaily.com wrote earlier this week that the Cardinals have already offered "one of their best young pitchers" to Miami in prospective trade talks. Of the teams connected to Stanton so far -- others being the Giants, Phillies, and Red Sox -- St. Louis undoubtedly has the best cost-controlled pitching talent, but there is a question as to whether the 28-year-old superstar would accept a move to a Midwest team. He's said to prefer one of the coasts and his mega-contract contains a full no-trade clause.
