No, not likely, but it's a negotiation. Makes sense for him to ask something in that range.

And with Upton having signed leaving him and JDM as the only middle of the order OF corners available, his timing is good.

Oh come on Rusty Rider is super interesting and only 4 years away from anchoring the middle innings in Vegas.

I say screw the FA market - pool together the relievers we got in July and August and get the Marlins to chip in half Stanton's contract (since we're giving them both quantity and quality).

MLB teams that have inquired on FA outfielder Jay Bruce say he’s seeking a deal for 5 years in the $80-90 million range.

I feel pretty confident we're not going to sign an OFer if these are the prices.

Let me be the first to post this.......

"Remember when Bruce was seeking a 5 year deal.... and he had to settle for this"

because its going to get posted at some point.

You might end up being surprised. I think there is a better chance he gets 5 years than has to settle for 3. Dexter Fowler got 5 years a year ago at the exact same age as Bruce. I think Bruce's down seasons are enough in the past not to drag him down now, and generally attributed to knee issues that have apparently cleared up.

Plus he was 5 DRS this past season and has more OF assists than any other OFer in baseball since he broke in in 2008, so while he's not an elite OFer, he's not going to get dinged for that either. With the Rangers, Jays and Tribe all possibly in the market, he should end up getting a pretty good deal. He may not get 5, but he should be able to get 4 years and at least $50M.

if they went big somewhere, maybe they break from form and go for a top reliever. probably should add a starter then look at some versatile position guys. sounds like neil walker’s name has come up. could use COF who plays 1B. smith may start in minors. standing pat at catcher.

The idea of DSmith starting the year in the minors hasn't really gotten a lot of attention here, tho a few people did bring that up. That is an interesting twist bc the only real fallback on the roster at 1B right now is Flo, and so that's something they will have to decide... whether they are comfortable going with Flo at 1B everyday. Obviously he's not a bad hitter but he'll be a little weak by 1B standards (and clearly so will Smith right now).

With a bunch of 1Bmen available, they may look at a guy like Adam Lind if they can get him on a 1 yr deal.

More Marc Carig Retweeted Thomas Henderson
A few years ago, the Pirates traded Neil Walker for Jon Niese. I mention that now because Mets could have some guys that may fall in that category. Somebody with flaws but is valued elsewhere because of need. Teams have liked Lugo and Gsellman for example.

Thomas Henderson @ThomasHendo52
Replying to @MarcCarig
They don't really have much to trade though, no? Unless they trade deGrom or something like that. They have a rather middling system at best right now.

I have mentioned dealing Gsell. I think he's def a candidate to be moved, along with AJR (not nec in the same deal).

I don't see how they add a 1B in addition to all the other holes......all for less than $30m.

I believe it was Puma's article suggesting an OF/1B hybrid and giving us the options of Lind, Bruce and Morrisson. Talk about awful choices.

Dom Smith opens the season 1-10 and Logan Morrison starts for the next 3 months for your 80 win team.

Pass.

Moving AJR and non-tendering Harvey opens up about another $14M.

Fowler was a CF though, admittedly not a very good one, but a CF. That makes a difference.

It's also kind of funny hearing Fowler's name. Gave me a flashback to last season's off-season discussions.
