if they went big somewhere, maybe they break from form and go for a top reliever. probably should add a starter then look at some versatile position guys. sounds like neil walker’s name has come up. could use COF who plays 1B. smith may start in minors. standing pat at catcher.

The idea of DSmith starting the year in the minors hasn't really gotten a lot of attention here, tho a few people did bring that up. That is an interesting twist bc the only real fallback on the roster at 1B right now is Flo, and so that's something they will have to decide... whether they are comfortable going with Flo at 1B everyday. Obviously he's not a bad hitter but he'll be a little weak by 1B standards (and clearly so will Smith right now).

With a bunch of 1Bmen available, they may look at a guy like Adam Lind if they can get him on a 1 yr deal.

I believe it was Puma's article suggesting an OF/1B hybrid and giving us the options of Lind, Bruce and Morrisson. Talk about awful choices.

Thos are all 1B/OF in the same way that Duda is a 1B/OF.

I don't see how they add a 1B in addition to all the other holes......all for less than $30m.

Moving AJR and non-tendering Harvey opens up about another $14M.

Wright "retiring" opens up $15m.

Yeah, it's almost impossible to take a 1Bman and make him into an OFer, but the other way is at least possible. I might look at a guy like Matt Joyce as a decent stop-gap platoon option. But again, he would be learning 1B.

Adam Lind should be cheap enough. I don't think the market overvalues 1-dimensional 1b types. The Nats declined a $5m option. Thats the kind of guy I'd bring in for 1st, and address OF separately (not 1 guy for both).

If Dom is clearly superior, Lind is your AdA/Kelly Johnson/whoever type off the bench that we lacked in 2016 after Conforto pushed his way into the lineup and the 4 OFers were basically never healthy together again. If not, Dom goes to AAA. Or you shop Dom around and wait on Alonso or Mazeika or whoever coming up - I'm not worried much about 1B long term, you can always fill that spot.

If we're looking for a 1B/OF, there are none on the free agent market. Its going to take a trade. Adam Duvall?

Prefer my Christian Walker idea. But I assume they'll go down the Lind path. And yeah I don't think OF is going to be a need unless it gets closer to ST and appears Scooter is farther away then first thought.

Yeah it seems like there used to be more of these swing guys. Piscotty is the guy who fits the corner/1B slot that is prob available this winter however.

I want no part of players like Morrison or Lind. If we're going to plug in a player and just hope for a good season, we may as well have Smith out there every day.

I agree. The team does not need a cross your fingers type player. They need a very solid bat that can play 140 games.

Morrison was a 3+ win player this season and hit 38 HRs.

Lind would be a decent addition to platoon with Flores at 1st. Was it confirmed that the Nats declined his option on their end versus him declining his part?

I didn't realize he did so well. I'd be interested but I still agree with the idea that I'd rather hope for home grown upstarts than someone else's problem.
