Unrelated but I'll say this... if Thompson were a Cardinals prospect I'd have supreme confidence he'd throw up 2-3 2+ fWAR seasons for the minimum for them.

Gonna say it ends up being something like:

Duda for the 1/8M + option I mentioned elsewhere. 1B gigs are drying up and this will be too easy for the Mets to pass up.

Monty for Profar

Then if they get lucky after the Cards make an IF acquisition, the Mets could make a deal for Gyorko flipping AJR and Thompson. Gyorko is signed for the next 2 yrs for 23M I think. Was a 2.5 win player with 16 DRS at 3B this year.

Sign Jared Hughes to a 1/2M deal

Sign Ian Krol and Alen Hanson to minor league deals.

Maybe flip Robles for Matt Szczur or another spare part.

Gyorko is only owed 2 for 17.5... which is both appealing but also means your offer likely isn't enough. He's almost certainly worth more than that and his contract is cheap enough where they can use him all over the field if need be.

Cot's says it's:
2018 - $9M
2019 - $13M
2020 - $13M or $1M buyout

But yeah, even still, I don't have a good feel for his market value. He seems valuable enough to me but you keep hearing that the Cards are looking for an upgrade on their IF, so if they add someone like Machado, they will lose some leverage on Gyorko's value.

edit: snap, $7.5M coming from Pads for 18&19!

Yeah, you beat me to it but the Padres are on the hook for 7.5 so I think at the price (17.5) he both is cheap enough for the Cardinals to hold onto and cheap enough where a team trading for him would have to give up something "decent" ie more than Ramos/Thompson. The Gyorko trade was yet another great Cardinals move and another example of "Why can't Sandy do that?"

Well, he's worth giving up something for.

Why not give that Zucchini kid a shot at 2B. How bad could he be.

Gavin Cecchini? Pretty bad, probably.

I like Zucchini's glove (like the nickname too). Others here disagreed with me but he seemed to have good range and made some tough plays that our slower footed vets (Wilmer, TJ, Cabrera) would not have made. I think Zucchini's got a shot, but I don't think he's ready. He needs a coupl years to get used to MLB pitching. Better as a bench option for the near term.

Now if we were tanking, I'd say Wilmer at 2nd, Cecchini as backup - done and done, but we're trying (hoping) for playoffs. I don't see any way you give Cecchini the job and have a serious discussion about playoffs. It's tough enough giving guys like Dom or Nimmo regular playing time and selling the "We're trying to win" argument.

Zucchini has a real chance to be the next Luis Lopez if everything goes right for him.

In all honesty, they should just come out and claim they are increasing focus on drafting and development. Unlike spending it would be tough to call them out on it and would make them look "good".

Said the same thing - a bit more stronger- in the $10m thread. If they're against spending in free agency to the degree they need to, go the other way and reinvest it in the team. Actually, sign minor league free agents, use the rule 5 draft to your advantage and invest in all young talent.

I truly wouldn't mind the Mets operating like the Rays or A's.

That would require actual moves being made.
